The MVP award is meant to be bestowed upon that player of the league who has displayed the greatest performance throughout the season, without any biases. However, it’s typically given to a quarterback who is considered to be the most significant part of a team. And everyone has accepted this reality as among the 57 NFL MVP winners, 38 have been quarterbacks.
This season again, the top contenders for this award are the quarterbacks —Dak Prescott (+160), Brock Purdy (+200), Jalen Hurts (+700), and Lamar Jackson (+700). However, the NFL legend Rob Gronkowski demands a change as he strongly advocated for a non-quarterback to win this award this season.
During his latest appearance on Fox News Digital, Gronkowski said:
I don’t think there’s a deserving quarterback right now. There could be at the end of the year if someone picks up their play and is very, very consistent with it.Rob Gronkowski on Fox News Digital
Even though Gronkowski’s point of one or two quarterbacks not standing out of the MVP race seems valid, based on several sportsbooks, the frontrunners are the quarterbacks. However, the former tight end isn’t satisfied by the top MVP contenders, instead, he demands someone skilled. He emphasized that none of the quarterbacks who are in the MVP conversation have been consistent enough to be called “well-deserved to get it.“
Rob Gronkowski hypes Christian McCaffrey and Tyreek Hill for the 2023 MVP
When talking about a skilled player to win the NFL MVP award, Gronkowski put forward the name of the San Francisco 49ers’ running back Christian McCaffrey. He believes, the quarterbacks largely win this award because:
They're the most popular players out on the field at the most important position, that's for sure.
The NFL legend advocated for McCaffrey saying:
So let’s give it to a skilled player, Christian McCaffrey, a guy like him. He’s been scoring touchdowns every single game besides one, and he boosts the San Francisco 49ers like no other. When he’s out, they lost those games. So let’s give it to McCaffrey. He’s well deserving.
The running back McCaffrey has +3000 odds to win the award, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. And Gronkowski considers him the most deserving, considering his amazing stats in every single game of the 49ers throughout this season.
Moreover, the running back leads the league in rushing with 1,117 yards along with 12 touchdowns. He has made huge contributions to the victories of the 49ers.
Apart from him, Gronkowski also mentioned another non-quarterback NFL MVP contender, Tyreek Hill who is close to surpassing the 2,000-yard threshold in a single season, establishing his name in history. The Miami Dolphins wide receiver has logged league-high 1,481 yards and 12 touchdowns in the last 12 games.
