Robert Griffin III, one of the countless motorsport fans, had his jaws wide open after finding out that Lewis Hamilton would be ending his time with Mercedes, where he won six titles. But what shocked the retired NFL player even more is that the British driver will be joining the Ferrari F1 team in 2025.
It’s not often that one gets to witness a trade of this magnitude. Especially joining a direct rival against whom the individual has competed during their entire career. Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari falls into the same category.
On Thursday, Mercedes announced through Twitter that the 39-year-old would be leaving the team despite signing an extension in 2023. Ferrari reportedly activated a “release option in the contract announced last year.”
Hamilton released a statement. As per CNN, he said:
I have had an amazing 11 years with this team, and I’m so proud of what we have achieved together. Mercedes has been part of my life since I was 13 years old. It’s a place where I have grown up, so making the decision to leave was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make.Lewis Hamilton’s statement
RG3, who surprisingly keeps track of F1, shared that Hamilton’s move came as a shock. He compared it to Michael Jordan if he ever decided to play for the Chicago Bulls‘ greatest rivals, the Detroit Pistons. Now that would have been a showstopper.
Robert Griffin III compared Hamilton’s Ferrari move with Brady joining Patriots rivals
The retired quarterback turned ESPN analyst also added another name, and that was Tom Brady. Although the seven-time Super Bowl winner did play for two teams in his NFL career, the New England Patriots and later the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, RG3 suggested a completely left-field shout. He threw in the Indianapolis Colts‘ name on the hat.
Brady leaving for Tampa was already massive news. It’s hard to imagine what would have happened if he had joined the team, which was once led by Peyton Manning. While the Patriots were the lords for a better part of two decades from 2000, Manning was the only one who could go toe to toe with Brady.
Where the 46-year-old dominated his counterpart during regular season ball, winning nine times from 12 encounters, Manning had the upper hand in the postseason. The five-time NFL MVP boasted a 3-2 record in the playoffs. Coincidentally, Peyton’s brother Eli Manning was Brady’s Achilles heel, beating him twice in the Super Bowl (2008 and 2012) with the Giants.
