The quarterback drama in New England has been a great storyline this season. They started their campaign with Mac Jones as their quarterback. However, after a string of poor performances in the first few weeks of the season, the Patriots decided to bench him for backup QB Bailey Zappe. The backup QB though, has failed to make any impact. As a result of that, rookie Malik Cunningham is now being considered for that role for the remainder of the season.

Cunningham went undrafted in this year’s draft but was signed by the Patriots to their practice squad. He had an impressive preseason with the Pats, but Jones was always the designated starter for the season. However, the QB revealed on Friday that he was practising more at the quarterback position ahead of the Patriots’ next game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Cunningham said:

Yeah, I’m very confident in my game. I feel like my teammates are confident in me, too. I’m confident in those guys. We’re all just coming together and trying to get this win this weekend.

Cunningham practiced in the offseason mainly as a receiver. However, he played at the quarterback position during his debut against the Houston Texans in the preseason. He impressed onlookers with his dazzling play in that game.

The Patriots are in desperate need of some inspiration. They have lost 9 of their first 11 games and are in deep trouble. Jones and Zappe have struggled throughout the season. They will hope that Cunningham provides a much-needed spark for the team going forward.

Bill Belichick talks about Malik Cunningham’s unique skillset

The New England Patriots‘ rookie, Malik Cunningham, is a QB/WR combo. He successfully made the transition from a college QB to an NFL receiver and practiced at that position during the offseason. However, he might have to assume the role of the starting QB in New England after a tough start to the season. HC Bill Belichick recently spoke about Cunningham’s uniqueness and his strange usage.

Belichick told reporters:

He’s different than probably anyone else on our roster, so he’s been handled differently.

Cunningham might get the starting QB job against the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday. He has received a lot of reps in that position this week.

The Patriots are on a four-game losing streak and were humiliated by the New York Giants in their last game. They have had one of the worst offenses in the league as they have struggled to put up points on the board. Cunningham will be tasked to score as many touchdowns as he can when he gets the opportunity.
