Russell Wilson’s meeting with the New York Giants fell apart after team refused to guarantee him the starter’s job over Daniel Jones

The New York Giants faced a debacle last season after QB Daniel Jones went down with a torn Achilles. With him being ruled out for the entire season and backup QB Tyrod Taylor being unavailable for a brief period, the team relied on Tommy Devito, who in all fairness did a great job and exceeded expectations. While Jones is expected to return this season, the team briefly considered the thought of signing Russell Wilson to its roster.
Russell Wilson apparently took a meeting with the New York Giants before taking the call to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The reason for Russ’ reluctance to play in the Big Apple was owing to the fact that the team failed to guarantee he would get an opportunity to become the starter over Daniel Jones.
As per a report from The Athletic, Wilson met up with the Giants before speaking to the Steelers. The latter wasted no time in making it clear to him that if he were to sign with them, then he would get the role of the starting QB, but in the case of the Giants, the team was reluctant to make any promises.
The New York Giants continue to have faith in Daniel Jones as their starting QB
The Giants cannot be blamed in this instance as the team has gone all-in on Daniel Jones after they offered him a four-year deal worth $160 million last offseason. From a financial standpoint, it would make no sense to bring Russell Wilson aboard and give him the majority of the snaps while paying Jones a hefty sum and reducing his workload.
After Wilson signed with the Steelers, the Giants signed Drew Lock, who accepted the backup position. He admitted in his introductory press conference that Jones will be the team’s starting QB. This year will be a do-or-die opportunity for Jones as he has to show that he is worthy of continuing as the team’s franchise QB.
His job is not safe and it could also be one of the reasons as to why the team considered bringing Russell Wilson aboard. If Jones fails to play consistently, in that case, the Giants would be able to give Lock the opportunity to start and ensure the entire season does not go for a toss.
