Former Super Bowl Champion and the controversial HC Sean Payton is having a busy week after being named the new head coach of the Denver Broncos. Amidst his busy few days, Payton took time to join Fox Sports during their Super Bowl opening night broadcast, where the former Saints HC revealed an interesting story about how he almost drafted Patrick Mahomes to become Drew Brees‘ successor before the Chiefs messed up that plan.
While speaking at the ceremony, Payton revealed that they had a private workout to evaluate the Texas Tech quarterback. “It’s pretty common if you go through these pre-draft workouts and we had a private workout for Patrick, which involved our offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, we send him all the information, one day, two days, three days of install, learn it overnight, we’ll be there the next day and he was magnificent in the room,” said Payton about the pre-draft progress.
Payton then went on to praise Mahomes by saying that he was the best college quarterback that he had ever evaluated in his 20-plus years. “He’s fantastic at the line of scrimmage when you watch him. He is very very quick, not everyone is like that. And then on the field he had great arm talent,” said Sean Payton about Mahomes’ intangibles. “He was the best college quarterback I had ever evaluated.”
Sean Payton reveals Patrick Mahomes almost became the Saints QB
During the 2017 NFL draft, Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints had the No.11 overall draft pick and were looking for a quarterback to take over after Drew Brees. However, Andy Reid and the Chiefs surprised everyone by trading up to the 10th pick from their original 27th pick and got their franchise QB Patrick Mahomes. As a result, the Saints settled for a defensive player and drafted defensive back Marshon Lattimore, who went on to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
“We were picking at eleven that year in the draft. The Chiefs traded up to 10 and took Patrick Mahomes. We selected Marshon Lattimore who was the Defensive Rookie of the Year, but that’s how the draft is,” said Payton.
The cornerback Marshon Lattimore became the cornerstone of the Saints’ defense through the years and proved to be a good pick, but it’s no doubt that the fans and the owners would’ve been happier if they got Patrick Mahomes as Drew Brees’ successor.
