Shannon Sharpe adheres to the notion of Odell Beckham Jr. not being the ‘No.1’ WR and believes he isn’t worth a ‘lot of money’

Odell Beckham Jr. continues to be the top free agent in the market. With the second week of free agency coming to an end, there still hasn’t been any movement and no teams have come forward and said that they are actively pursuing the star wide receiver. Many teams including the Jets, Chiefs, Giants, and Bills have been named as possible destinations for Beckham but nothing has been finalized as of yet.
UNDISPUTED co-host Shannon Sharpe heavily criticized OBJ when reports surfaced about the free agent asking for $20 million compensation from whichever team signs him. The Hall of Fame tight end said Beckham isn’t worth that kind of money and he bolstered his claim with additional points in the latest episode of his talk show.
“I think Odell is thinking he should get paid on what he already accomplished and that’s not how it works anymore,” Shannon said. “You are talking about a receiver who is about be 30 years of age, two ACL injuries, he’s had hernia surgery, he had a broken ankle four years ago. So, all of this Skip within the last four-five years, I just don’t see him getting the payday he is thinking and I don’t think people value him and look at him like he looks at himself.”
OBJ suffered an injury during the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI victory which kept him out of the game for the entire 2022 season. Shannon said that teams view him as a complementary receiver or as a No.2 receiver at best. The 30-year-old receiver is injury prone and given that he will be 31 years shortly, teams believe that he won’t be productive as he was in his prime and won’t shell out a Davante Adams-type of deal for him.
Odell Beckham Jr. says $4 million a year ain’t enough
There were rumors about Odell Beckham Jr. wanting a deal that would pay him anywhere between $15-20 million but he squashed those rumors just as quickly as they spread. Beckham wrote on his Twitter handle, “I’m just so confused where the quote is from me that said I want 20…..all I’m saying is 4 AINT enough.” While OBJ has been an absolute beast in the past, teams can’t foresee his production in the coming season based on his private workout alone.
The New York Jets has been reported to be the ideal destination for Beckham since Aaron Rodgers is about to join the team and is in need of great offensive weapons. However, the Jets already have a great depth chart with 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson, Mecole Hardman, Allen Lazard, and Corey Davis. So, adding OBj won’t make much sense for them.
The former first-round pick called out to his former Giants teammate Saquon Barkley and asked him to have General Manager Joe Schoen call his manager in hopes of a homecoming. But as Shannon Sharpe said, maybe teams don’t look at him as a WR1 anymore and might be skipping out on his in free agency and rather draft a wide receiver in April.
It’ll be interesting to see which team signs Odell Beckham Jr. and how much they pay him!
