Shannon Sharpe is one of the greatest tight ends in the history of the NFL. He played in the league for 14 seasons, mainly for the Denver Broncos, and won two Super Bowls with them. He then moved on to the Baltimore Ravens and won his third Super Bowl.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end recently appeared on the podcast New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce and had a fun conversation with the Kelce brothers about his career and more.
During one such conversation, Sharpe revealed that he was on the verge of being cut by the Broncos in his rookie season. Shannon said, “I was on the board to get cut. This was 1990. I was a seventh-round draft pick. I’ll never forget this. We were playing Arizona Cardinals and one of the coaches came to me and he said, ‘Shannon your name is on the board to get cut. You might, you might not but your name is on the board.'”
Shannon Sharpe added that the coach asked him to “bust your a**” and perform his best on the field for the tape. Being the competitor he is, the GOAT tight end gave his all and after two mediocre seasons in Denver, he was promoted to starting tight end in 1992 and the rest is history. Thankfully, the Broncos didn’t cut Sharpe owing to his playmaking ability but did give him the scare of his life by putting his name on the list!
Shannon Sharpe calls Travis Kelce the greatest tight end ever

Travis Kelce just won his second Super Bowl as the Chiefs defeated the Eagles and Shannon Sharpe couldn’t stop gushing about the younger Kelce brother. “He’s better in the postseason compared to the regular season, what we call him is a big game player,” Shannon Sharpe said on the New Heights podcast. “I don’t know how you make an argument that says Trav isn’t the greatest TE ever.”
Sharpe also talked about Kelce being dynamic in the regular season and delivering 1000 yards season year after year. He also stated that the 33-year-old tight end is even more dangerous in the postseason along with quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Fans weren’t impressed by Sharpe’s statement and asked why he snubbed Rob Gronkowski. There has always been a debate about which tight end is the best – Gronk or Kelce. One fan wrote on Twitter, “Argument: Hes not a real TE” referring to Kelce. Even Gronk himself said a few weeks back, “I’m a complete tight end baby!” in a witty response to who is better.
Travis Kelce does have the stats backing Sharpe’s claim, but Gronk transcended the position and changed the way the league looked at tight ends. Not just a receiver, but an effective blocker as well.
