The NFL just finished its annual head coach hiring circle and 5 NFL teams have found their new head coach. However, only one HC out of those five new ones is African-American. Even though many hot Black assistant coaches’ names including the Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy were in the mix for a new head coach gig, only one of them actually managed to land a head coach job.

The Houston Texans hired the former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as their new head coach. With him included, there are currently only three Black head coaches in the league. The other two are the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ long-time head coach Mike Tomlin and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers second-year HC Todd Bowles.

This low number of minority head coaches has been an issue for a long time and has been a talking point in sports media every off-season. In that trend, Fox Sports analyst Skip Bayless has now given his opinion about the issue. While talking in a recent episode of his show UNDISPUTED, with his co-host Shannon Sharpe, Skip said that he believes the disparity is due to the old and white NFL owners.

“I’m going to boil it down to these older White owners just aren’t that comfortable with a Black head coach because they need to interact, they need to go to dinner with the wives or the significants, or whatever, and they’re just not that comfortable,” said Bayless in a recent episode of UNDISPUTED.

Skip Bayless also mentioned how a White owner might click easily with the White head coaches compared to their Black counterparts. “When they do have an interview, it’s gonna be a quicker click with a young White hot candidate,” Bayless said.

Fans on social media agreed with Skip Bayless’ shocking claim about how White owners prefer to hire White head coaches because of their cultural similarities. Bayless claims it’ll only change when owners start to think progressively.

“It’s just culture; it’s just the way life is, and I don’t know how to defeat it because each of these guys is an independent owner in the umbrella of the NFL. And it’s hard to legislate, ‘you must hire a Black coach’,” said Bayless.

When a league, which mostly consists of Black players has only 3 Black head coaches, it does raise some questions about the hiring process. It only proves that despite their activism against racial inequality in the country, as an organization they still have a long way to go in addressing equality.
