“Trying to get somebody killed” – Social media hilariously reacts to Detroits coach Dan Campbell’s bizarre request to have a real LION on sidelines
Campbell claimed they would take good care of the lion.

Owning a dog or a cat as a pet is for the average person, not for Dan Campbell. The Detroit Lions head coach wanted to have a lion as a companion when he joined them. A couple of years have passed since then, and he is still waiting for a nod.
This week, while appearing on the Barstool Sports podcast Pardon My Take, he reiterated his unfulfilled wish. “I would love to literally just have a pet lion,” he said. “Just a legit pet lion on a chain.”
However, the former tight end revealed that the objections came from the NFL itself, which did not like the idea of a live lion roaming around on the football field. He also claimed that owner Sheila Ford Hamp was on board with the idea.
“She had no problem with it, but the league apparently frowns on those types of things,” he said. Despite the rejections, Dan Campbell refused to blame NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for the decision. “I’m not gonna point out Roger. Let’s just say the league frowns on that,” the 47-year-old repeated. Campbell still has hope that he will get to keep one. “We would take great care of it. It would be fed well and petted,” he added.
Despite his eagerness to own a lion, Dan Campbell is aware of the risk, but he is not willing to take it that seriously. “I might end up losing an arm. But that would be even better [validation,]” he said, as per Fox.
Live animals are common in college football, but not in the NFL. That said, the Seattle Seahawks have their Hawk, and the Denver Broncos have their horse. So it’s not completely unusual.
Social media in uproar after hearing a lion might be roaming the Detroit matches
Since the interview of Detroit head coach Dan Campbell’s wanting a lion as a pet went viral, social media had some wild reactions.
Dan Campbell wants to win the 2023 Super Bowl with the Detroit Lions
Well, a live lion may still be a farfetched dream on the sidelines, but winning the Super Bowl is not. Dan Campbell is confident that his team is a playoff contender. But he has a warning for his players before the 2023 season begins: they need to earn their place in the starting line-up.
“We’ve got expectations,” Campbell told Dan ‘Big Cat’ Katz during the Barstool podcast. “I and the players are developing, and we expect to be a better team. We want to get in the playoffs and win a Super Bowl.”
The Detroit Lions made waves during this year’s NFL Draft by signing running back Jahmyr Gibbs as their 12th overall pick. With another year of experience under quarterback Jared Goff, anything is possible.
