New England Patriots are having a rough season, but no one could have prepared the Patriots fans for their team’s abysmal last-minute play in their defeat against the Las Vegas Raiders.

New England Patriots lost to the Las Vegas Raiders 30-24 on Sunday. While trying to win the game in regulation time, Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers threw a lateral to his quarterback Mac Jones, but the pass was intercepted by the Raiders defensive end Chandler Jones, who scored the game-winning touchdown to close the game.

Patriots were mocked by many people for that play. In that trend, ESPN Analyst Stephen A. Smith has criticized the Patriots. Speaking on his show First Take, Smith has called it the dumbest play in NFL history. “That might be the dumbest play we have ever seen in NFL history,” said Smith.

Smith continued that when people talk about all the horrible plays in the NFL history, including the infamous butt fumble, one can’t name anything dumber than what happened at the Patriots-Raiders game. His co-host Molly Qerim came to Jakobi Meyers‘ defense, saying that the WR panicked when he was trying to make something happen.

Smith added that people have seen many mistakes happen in the NFL in the past, but no one has ever seen anything like what the Patriots did in the final play of the game. “Mistakes happen. What we haven’t seen was something that dumb,” said Smith.

After this embarrassing loss, Patriots have now slipped to 7-7 after their loss against the Raiders and have a tough opponent ahead in the red-hot Cincinnati Bengals, who they will be facing this weekend.

Worst play in the NFL history

Was the last-minute lateral fiasco in the Patriots-Raiders game the worst play in NFL history? It may or may not be the worst play, but it certainly is one of the top contenders for that title. Let’s take a look at some other plays that deserve this title.

When you talk about the worst plays in the NFL, most people’s first answer will be The Butt Fumble. This iconic play happened during a game between the New York Jets and New England Patriots. Jets’ QB Mark Sanchez took the ball from the center and ran into the rear side of his offensive tackle, which caused a fumble, hence the name.

Another play that deserves this title resulted in a safety. Detroit Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky ran out of the back of the end zone in a brain fade moment, resulting in a safety.

There are many moments like these throughout NFL history, but the recency bias implies that what happened at the Patriots-Raiders game on Sunday is the worst play in NFL history.
