Stephen A. Smith and Zach Wilson

Stephen A. Smith has spoken in depth about star quarterback Zach Wilson being benched for the New York Jets against the Chicago Bears. The Jets decided to bench Wilson and go with Mike White after Wilson’s bad form and attitude over the last few weeks cost them terribly. White led the team to a thumping 31-10 victory over the Bears.

Speaking on First Take, Stephen A. Smith was very clear about his thoughts on Zach Wilson. He opened by saying that he doesn’t want to see Wilson again this year. The 23-year-old was also pictured in a hoodie with a sulking face and Smith said that his look was very appropriate because only he himself is responsible for whatever is happening to him. Smith expressed that despite being young, you need to have accountability and Wilson lacked that as a leader.

“Hell yeah. I don’t want to see Zach Wilson again this year. I thought it was very, very appropriate that he sat on the sideline with a hoodie on looking the way that he looked. He should’ve looked that way. He brought it on himself. The fact of the matter is that you can be young, hell you can be immature, you can be undisciplined, you can be a lot of these different things but what you can’t do is give the impression to your teammates that you ain’t ready to accept accountability. Can’t do that,” Smith said.

He further said that Mike White played a very good game and hence the Jets should be persistent with him going ahead in the season. “At the end of the day, I’m going to tell you, first of all, Mike White played a hell of a game. I believe that this guy is capable- no you’re not going to the Super Bowl because of him but he is someone that could help you. With that defense, it’s as real as they are,” he added.

Smith further zeroed down on Wilson’s attitude and pointed out how happy the Jets were with White after the win. He added that it looked like the team wanted Wilson out and that isn’t just about his ability, but also his attitude.

“I picked this up, this is just me- you see how happy those players were post-game with Mike White? Usually, if you’ve got love and respect for a guy who lost his job, you will be concerned about how it may affect him. They had no such concerns for Zach Wilson which means to me, they wanted him out of the lineup, they’re glad he’s out of the lineup and it ain’t just because of his ability,” he said.

He said that the team saw Wilson right there and celebrated in front of him without thinking twice and hence; it is evident that the right decision was made of benching Wilson.

“It’s when you don’t like somebody, you celebrate right in front of their face at their expense and you don’t give a damn. That is something you pick up on. They saw Zach Wilson right there, they didn’t care. That shows the right decision was made,” he concluded.

The Jets are 7-4 up for the season and are third in a very competitive AFC East division which has the Dolphins and the Eagles with 8-3 in the top two spots. They have two very important games coming up in the next two weeks- against the Vikings and the Bills.
