Lamar Jackson took offense to ESPN's Jamison Hensley's article.

Social media has become a double-edged sword for celebrities and athletes. They get to communicate with their fans and get to stay updated on the latest buzz surrounding them. However, at times, things can get a bit overwhelming. Fans online may not always have pleasant things to say to athletes and while some do offer constructive criticism, there are fans who call players out and disrespect them with their comments.

Lamar Jackson, the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens is fairly active on social media. Recently, he took offense to a fan’s comments after the individual claimed that he does not deserve to get a big contract extension worth $250 million. The fan was irked over the Ravens’ narrow one-point loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The game came down to the wire, and it was up to Justin Tucker to save the fate of the team. “When someone is asking for over 250 mil guaranteed like (Lamar Jackson)… games like this should not come to (Justin Tucker). Let Lamar walk and spend that money on a well-rounded team.” This was the tweet from the fan.

Lamar did not hold back in his response to the fan and wrote, “Boy STFU y’all be capping too much on this app mf never smelt a football field never did shit but eat d**k.” Clearly, he had no chill and went all in on him. In this context, his tweet can be classified as vulgar, and maybe not the best decision on his part to respond in this manner, but the quarterback is human too and has emotions.

Lamar Jackson lashed out at a fan who claimed he did not deserve a large contract:

Lamar Jackson and Jamison Hensley
Lamar Jackson called Jamison Hensley out for “defamation.”

His response became viral and ESPN covered this. Reporter Jamison Hensley wrote a piece on this particular subject but while his article mentioned that this was the quarterback’s response to a social media post that critiqued his performance, it also classified this profanity-laced tweet as one that had an anti-gay phrase.

The last part of Jackson’s tweet was dubbed to be anti-gay by the reporter. Lamar Jackson noticed this and did not hold back in his response as he took great offense to this statement that painted him as homophobic in nature. The article did not call him homophobic, but it did state that he used an anti-gay phrase, which may lead one to believe that he is homophobic.

Here is what Lamar had to say, “This is defamation of my character, because not once have I ever mentioned or disrespect anyone’s sexuality, sexual orientation, gender, religion or race. Your reaching…” He made sure to tag the journalist who wrote this piece as well.

In this particular context, Lamar Jackson’s comments appear to purely be out of rage over the comments made by the fan. The quarterback has had a pretty clean record when it comes to how he handles himself in the public domain. Even in this recent interview with Laura Okmin, Lamar’s personality and professionalism are on full display as he treats the interviewer with the utmost respect.

Fans appeared to side with Lamar as well on this, take a look at some of their reactions:

This situation does give rise to an interesting question. Is it wrong for athletes to express their unfiltered opinion and respond to fans? Do share your thoughts on this incident!

On the sports side of the things, the Baltimore Ravens and Lamar Jackson will look to redeem themselves this weekend when they face Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos.
