“He’s not DOING as much as other QBs”: Stephen A. Smith DISMISSES Patrick Mahomes from the MVP race this season

The 2022 NFL season is underway, and what a first week it was, as we enter the second week filled with lots of action-packed football, we cannot help but make some predictions on who will win the MVP award this season. Granted, it’s only been a week but the teams that we have seen play are looking very different from last season and we love the increased competition.

Following Kansas City Chiefs’ impressive 2-0 start to the season after beating the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Chargers, Patrick Mahomes is already seen as one of the frontrunners to win the MVP this season. The Chiefs have faced many issues this offseason including the departure of wideout Tyreek Hill and Safety Tyrann Mathieu but so far, the team may have shown us some chinks in its armor but they have been able to win games and move ahead unscathed.

Stephen A. Smith is betting on Josh Allen or Justin Herbert to win the MVP this season:

Despite Patrick Mahomes being a favorite to win the MVP this season, ESPN First Take analyst Stephen A. Smith is not buying into this hype. For him, Patrick Mahomes has an extremely slim chance to win the MVP this year as he believes there are other top contenders in the league who have a much better shot to win the award following their week 1 performances and what they will prove in the weeks to come.

Here’s what Stephen A. Smith had to say, “To me, it’s a two-horse race, it’s between Josh Allen and Justin Herbert. I’m going to even throw Joe Burrow in there because of the receiving crew he has there. I’m going to go with (Josh) Allen and (Justin) Herbert as the two primary MVP candidates. I think they will be throwing the football, I think they will be asked to do more than Patrick Mahomes will be asked to do.”

Stephen A. is of the opinion that Patrick Mahomes has to be smarter this season as without Tyreek Hill, he cannot just throw the ball like he did last season and hope Tyreek is somewhere down there to catch it. Though the Chiefs have added some weapons to make up for the absence of Hill, Mahomes still needs to build chemistry with them and be careful that he does not end up throwing a pick-six.

Josh Allen and Justin Herbert on the other hand are two prospects who are looking great so far, Allen led the Bills to a dominant victory over the defending Super Bowl champs, the Los Angeles Rams. This game was nothing short of a statement game for the Bill as they sent a message that was heard loud and clear by the rest of the teams. We are not settling for anything less than the Lombardi trophy this season.

Justin Herbert is a young quarterback who in just two years of being drafted has transitioned into a dedicated, hardworking, and consistent player for the Chargers. Herbert had one heck of a season last year and he has barely even tapped the ceiling of his potential. This offseason while most of the athletes were taking time off and were on vacation, Justin Herbert continued to put in the work and practiced like it was just another day in the regular season.

Despite the Chargers’ week 1 loss to the Chiefs, Herbert was stellar as he threw for 334 yards, had 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. As the season goes on, Herbert is bound to get better. Joe Burrow is another underdog to win the MVP, the Bengals squad lacked experience last season but this year, the whole team led by Burrow is hungrier than ever. Burrow’s chemistry with his receivers is bound to have improved in the offseason which is why it would be foolish to take him out of the MVP race. Who do you think will win the MVP for the 2022-23 regular season? Let us know!
