The San Francisco 49ers drafted QB Trey Lance third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. After a rough two years with the Niners filled with injuries and inconsistent play, the Niners shipped Lance to the Dallas Cowboys in a trade during the preseason. The Niners-Cowboys is one of the NFL’s biggest rivalries, and any trade between them might have a significant impact. However, it does not go down well with some fans and players.

Steve Young, the former Niners’ Super Bowl-winning QB, did not like the Lance moving to the Cowboys. Young played in a period when the Niners-Cowboys rivalry was at its peak. So naturally, he did not like the reality of the Niners trading a QB of Lance’s talent to their arch-rivals. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Young explained why he did not like the trade, giving an example of a former trade that apparently cost the Niners some Super Bowls.

“I have PTSD,” Young said in the interview. “I feel like we should never trade anything to the Dallas Cowboys ever again after the Charles Haley disastrous mistake.” Young felt that the prior trade cost some Superbowls for the Niners. The 49ers traded Haley to the Cowboys in 1992. He went on to win three Super Bowls in Dallas. Young also voiced the same sentiment on Twitter, urging the 49ers not to trade anything to Dallas ever.

Lance was named the starting QB of the 49ers last season, but an injury kept him out most of the season. Jimmy Garroppolo took over as the starting QB but got injured. It paved the way for Brock Purdy, who had an impressive debut season with the Niners. His impressive performances led Shanahan to name him as the starter for this season.

Kyle Shanahan calls the decision of drafting Trey Lance a mistake

San Francisco 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan is considered one of the best coaches in the league, mainly because of his ability to win games with not-so-great quarterbacks. The Niners, under Shanahan, have been to three NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl with Jimmy Garoppolo as the starting QB. Garoppolo is not a bad QB, but he is also not an elite one. He might be considered an above-average QB at best. Shanahan got the best out of him in his time with the Niners.

So when the Niners moved up in the 2021 NFL Draft and got Trey Lance with the third overall pick, some felt that Lance would become a mainstay of the Niners. Unfortunately, it did not work out, and they traded the Niners to the Cowboys after just two years. Shanahan opened up about the trade and called the decision of drafting Lance as a mistake due to what they gave up.

Lance will backup QB Dak Prescott in Dallas. Shanahan and the Niners recently named Brock Purdy their starter for this season, with Sam Darnold as QB2. Darnold beat out Lance for the position. The Niners begin their season against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week 1.
