Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance
The San Francisco 49ers shocked the entire NFL last week after they decided to retain veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo despite choosing Trey Lance, their 2021 NFL Draft pick to be the starter this season. There was no hope for Jimmy G to return to the team following his shoulder injury in the playoffs, the quarterback knew as soon as the season ended that it was in all likelihood, his last game as the starter for San Francisco. He has been rehabbing the entire offseason and the team has allowed him to use its training facility.
It was reported that while Trey Lance and all the starters were getting reps in during the mandatory minicamps, Jimmy G would practice but with the reserves and other players. The latest contract that Jimmy signed now stipulates that he will be entitled to receive $6.5 million in guaranteed money this year and he can earn another $10 million in the form of incentives if he becomes the starter once again. That surely is a good enough reason to stay.
Jimmy Garoppolo is still a threat to Trey Lance’s position as the starting QB:

Trey Lance was reportedly not happy with the 49ers retaining Jimmy G. The fact that the team was willing to renegotiate the terms of his contract did not sit well with him because it was certain that he would be traded and his time as a 49er was done. These last-moment negotiations did not sit well with Lance who may have misconstrued this move as the front office still doubting his talent.
Jimmy Garoppolo has given us every reason to think that he was either going to be cut or traded from San Francisco. The quarterback did not attend any quarterback meets, he was not given a copy of the team’s playbook, and had never spoken to the team’s new quarterbacks coach Brian Griese. Senior NFL Insider Albert Breer reported that “Trey Lance was a little annoyed in the immediate aftermath” of Jimmy G being retained.
Lance has spent a lot of time on the bench considering he is the third pick in the 2021 draft. He started two games in 2021 when Jimmy G was out and threw the ball for 441 yards with two TDs and two INTs. The latest move by the 49ers signals only one thing, that the team is cautiously optimistic about Trey Lance. They expect him to live up to the hype and perform but at the same time are not willing to risk throwing away an entire season in case he does not perform.
