The Bills are yet to sort out who will be Josh Allen's back up. Lance could have been a smart choice.

The Dallas Cowboys may have acquired Trey Lance, but they were not the only ones fighting for his services. Reports have surfaced that the Buffalo Bills were strong favorites to land the former 49er.
After it was announced on Wednesday that Sam Darnold would be the backup quarterback for the San Francisco franchise in the upcoming season, Lance’s future was thrown into contention. Inside sources had claimed that the front office was looking at every possibility for the 23-year-old. One of them was locating a suitable trade partner.
Earlier today, Adam Schefter shared that Lance is heading to Texas to play for the Cowboys. Undeniably, this is massive news considering the San Francisco 49ers traded three first-round picks to sign the two-time NCAA Division I Football Champion.
However, as per 49ers Webzone, NFL reporter Cam Inman revealed that the Buffalo Bills were also interested in Trey Lance. He wrote on X that Lance met with general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan after his trade to the Cowboys.

Why did the Buffalo Bills want to sign Trey Lance?
The regular season is around the corner, and the Buffalo Bills have yet to decide on their backup quarterback. Both Kyle Allen and Matt Barkley have shown quality in patches in the preseason games, but there is nothing to write home about.
NFL.com reported that the Bills don’t feel comfortable with either of them as their No. 2. ” Bills don’t appear too comfy with their QB options behind Josh Allen,” Eric Edholm wrote. “I could see Buffalo moving on from both.”
In the first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, Barkley seemed to have earned some admirers with his play. He completed 14 of 15 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Whereas Kyle finished 8 of 15 for 122 yards and threw an interception, the Bills won 23-19.
However, the situation reversed when they faced the Pittsburgh Steelers. Barkley this time drew the short end of the stick. He only completed 7 of 12 for 93 yards, three interceptions, and a fumble. Kyle, on the other hand, completed 12 of 15 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown.
But where does Trey Lance fit in between the pair? He had a modest couple of games compared to his Buffalo counterparts. The North Dakota State graduate played two matches in the preseason. He completed 22 of 33 passing attempts with a rating of 66.7 and scored two touchdowns. However, the biggest concern is the interceptions. Luckily for Lance, he only threw one, but there were several incomplete passes that could have resulted in one.
This basically means the 49ers lost a match in which Lance called most of the plays. Fortunately for him, he will now be the second-choice backup to Dak Prescott, as they are expected to release Will Grier from their squad.
