The much anticipated AFC Championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the AFC North Champions Cincinnati Bengals took a turn for the worse as it became a poorly officiated game. It ruined the fun for the NFL fans. Furthermore, the fans are now accusing the refs of foul play after their brainless call gave the Chiefs an extra attempt at a 3rd down during an important time of the game.
With just 10 minutes left during the fourth quarter of the game, the scores were tied 20-20, and the Kansas City Chiefs faced a vital 3 & 9 and failed to convert it. The Chiefs’ head coach sent in their punting unit to punt the ball away, but the refs had different plans. The referees discussed for a few minutes and announced that the play should be nullified because of a clock issue during the previous down.
The Chiefs were awarded an extra down, and even the commentators were confused by what they witnessed. Furthermore, on the second 3rd and 9, the Cincinnati Bengals managed to sack the Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, but the refs called a defensive penalty on Bengals DB Eli Apple, which negated the sack and gave the Chiefs an automatic first down.
Even with multiple chances, the Chiefs didn’t manage to score points on that drive, but it was definitely a bizarre sequence that raised some questions about the fairness in NFL officiating on social media.
Social media accuses the NFL officials of favoring the Chiefs against the Bengals
Fans on social media went berserk over the poor officiating in the AFC Championship game between the Chiefs and the Bengals.
The fans expected a showdown for ages between two of the best quarterbacks in the league: Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow. However, the officials ended up gaining the spotlight, but for all the wrong reasons.
The Bengals were called for nine penalties, which cost them 71 yards. In comparison, the Chiefs were called for four penalties, costing them 55 yards. However, the fans started to point out all the missed calls on the Chiefs, especially during the game’s final minutes, which led to a Chiefs game-winning field goal.
Nevertheless, Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to one more impressive fourth-quarter comeback, which won them the AFC Championship. Furthermore, they will head to Arizona to face the NFC Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, in the Super Bowl.
