A few years back, all everyone was talking about was Cam Newton. The star quarterback had it all – big size, a big cannon arm, the presence of mind on the field, and the ability to lead a franchise all the way to the Super Bowl. However, somewhere down the line, everything fell apart and Newton was nothing but a memory.
He was selected first overall by the Carolina Panthers in the 2011 NFL draft after a collegiate career that was adorned with countless awards. Right off the bat, Newton showed he has come into the league to dominate as he became the first rookie to throw for 4000 yards in a season and also to throw for 400 yards in the NFL debut match. His exceptional performance won him the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
Cam Newton led the Panthers to four playoff appearances between 2013 and 2017 and Super Bowl 50 in 2015. The star quarterback won the league MVP during his Super Bowl campaign. However, things started to take a turn for the worse when he left Carolina in 2019 and joined the New England Patriots. He played one year with the Patriots and was released and then signed back with the Panthers.
His second stint in Carolina was short-lived after he went 0-5 in his first five starts. Since 2021, Cam Newton has been a free agent and no teams have had the mind to sign him again after his declining performance.
Cam Newton looking to make a comeback in the NFL
After being on the sidelines for more than a year, Cam Newton looks to make a strong comeback as he threw at Auburn’s Pro Day on March 21. Super Cam posted a hype video on his Instagram handle where he criticized the current quarterbacks in the league as he showed his arm strength. Newton threw his famous scrambling ability in the pocket before throwing the ball down 50 yards down the field.
In the video, the 33-year-old is heard saying, “ain’t 32 [quarterbacks] better than me.” During his stint in New England, Cam Newton had a passer rating of 82.9 and threw for 2657 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Fans were quick to call him out on his statement and asked him to stay back or go join the XFL. Here are some of the reactions of fans on Twitter.
Cam Newton is currently 33 years old and even though he threw some pretty interesting throws at Auburn’s Pro Day, teams won’t be interested in him. Just look at how Lamar Jackson is being treated. The 2023 draft has a great selection of quarterbacks and teams would rather spend their money and energy on developing these rookies than waste it on an aged quarterback with maybe two-three good years left in the tank.
