“We’ll see,” Bucs HC Todd Bowles gives a flaky response on Tom Brady’s potential return date ahead of the new season

Tom Brady has been absent for more than a week, citing undisclosed personal reasons. With no clear indication of his return, fans are understandably concerned, and head coach Todd Bowles’ comments on their star’s absence will not help. After initially indicating that Brady would be back after the second preseason game, the Buccaneers’ head coach has since confirmed that they do not have a timetable for his availability, with the regular season looming large.

According to ESPN, when asked when Brady would return, Bowles reportedly said, “We’ll see”, and, “I’m not concerned about it right now”. However, he stated that he has been in contact with Brady since his departure and is confident that he will return before the team’s trip to Dallas on September 11.

While this is good news for the franchise, it only adds to the mystery that the head coach felt the need to address Week 1 availability, especially given that this extended absence appears to have nothing to do with personal issues like health or family.

While the number of excused days, or the fact that they are being given out, is not surprising in the case of the legendary number 12, it is the first time he has been absent for such a long period of time, particularly during the pre-season.

Brady’s first excuse came after his 45th birthday. Days earlier, the Miami Dolphins had made headlines for being publicly punished by the NFL for their failed attempt to sign Brady, a move that appeared to have had no repercussions for Brady himself, despite the fact that he has not publicly refuted any claims or reports of his alleged connections to the Dolphins.

To get away with what could only be described as a blatant misdemeanour demonstrates his importance to the Buccaneers and the value they place on him. It hasn’t been long since Brady surprised everyone by returning to the franchise 40 days into his retirement, and if history is any guide, more drama is sure to follow.
