The New York Jets just can’t catch a break. After consistent offensive woes, the team decided to bench their former second-overall pick Zach Wilson in favor of the second-string QB Tim Boyle. Now that Boyle didn’t work out for them, they are looking to go back to Wilson as their leader, but the young quarterback is reportedly ‘reluctant’ to take the starting QB role again.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Jets want to go back to Wilson as their starting quarterback. However, the issue is, Wilson is not keen on returning to the New York-based football team.
[Wilson] is hesitant to step back into the role, multiple team sources said Monday. [The Jets are] hoping Wilson will change his mind. If Wilson were asked directly by the Jets to start, he would agree to that, a source familiar with Wilson's thinking saidThe Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported.
According to Russini, the 24-year-old quarterback — who just has 1 year left in his rookie deal — is worried about getting injured. While many others believe the relationship between Wilson and the Jets has been deteriorating.
A few days later, when the Jets made Tim Boyle their starting quarterback, they demoted Wilson to be their third-string quarterback, which might’ve hurt him. But those are just speculations.
Nonetheless, as of now, the Jets haven’t named a starting quarterback for their week 14 game against the Houston Texans, which is scheduled to take place this weekend.
Robert Saleh denies rumors about Zach Wilson
The rumors about Zach Wilson not wanting to play for the Jets gained stream after it was reported by renowned NFL insider Dianna Russini. However, those rumors have been squashed by the Jets head coach Robert Saleh.
During a press conference on Monday, head coach Saleh denied the rumors and even said Wilson has expressed his desire to be named the starting QB again for the Jets.
The young man wants the ball. He wants to start. He believes he's the best quarterback in the room and the best quarterback for this team and the guy who gives us the best chance to win. And I'll tell you guys the same thing I told him: I appreciate itSaleh told reporters on Monday
However, Saleh refused to name their starting QB for the Jets this weekend as he still contemplating that decision. The Jets currently have a record of 4 wins and 8 losses and their playoff chances are very slim. So, they might give Wilson a few more shots to prove himself in the league.
