“There was no trust left” – Reports suggest Russell Wilson ‘checked out’ in 2021 from the Seahawks before trade to Denver

The Seattle Seahawks sent shockwaves throughout the NFL world when they agreed to trade star quarterback Russell Wilson to Denver in exchange for multiple first-round picks.

It seemed a bit odd that Seattle agreed to trade their franchise quarterback when just a few weeks ago the Washington Commanders offered them the same deal and they showed zero interest in trading Wilson.

Russell Wilson felt like things weren’t the same anymore, lost trust in the organization and decided to say goodbye to the only team he’s known

Apparently, Russell Wilson had already made up his mind about moving on from the only team he’s known in the league. The divorce between Wilson and Seattle was all but inevitable according to The Athletic. The report states that Wilson and the Seahawks gradually lost more trust in each other in recent years, to the point that some of Wilson’s teammates believed the Pro Bowler “checked out” during the 2021 season.

The Super Bowl XLVIII champion and the coaching staff of the Seahawks had different offensive approaches that irked Wilson. That coupled with Tom Brady moving on from his Patriots dynasty and winning the Super Bowl in his debut season with the Bucs, Wilson made up his mind to attempt the same thing.

Russell Wilson had his agent, Mark Rodgers, call Seahawks general manager John Schneider last offseason with a list of acceptable trade destinations in the event Seattle wanted to part ways, per the report. This was the start of the impending exit of Wilson from Seattle. Then in the 2021 season, the star QB injured his finger and that’s why some of his teammates sensed like the QB had checked out, per report.

Wilson also said that his relationship with head coach Pete Carroll started to change. He grew increasingly frustrated with the staff’s run-heavy tendencies. “Without trust, the two sides couldn’t find a way to co-exist behind the scenes,” according to the report, “which rendered their public comments (about commitment) meaningless.”

Seattle’s loss is Denver’s gain. The Broncos received a QB that can lead them back to the Super Bowl after Hall of Fame QB Peyton Manning won the Broncos Super Bowl 50. The Broncos are looking to lif the Lombardi once again now that they’ve acquired Wilson. The Seahawks on the other hand will be looking to draft a QB despite owning Drew Lock in the trade. Let’s see how this trade folds out in the 2022 season!
