Amari Cooper is due $20 million in fully guaranteed money on the fifth day of the new league year. After settling this, the Cowboys will release the receiver. There are mixed reactions about the Cowboys firing Cooper. So, think the Cowboys should hold onto Cooper while others think the team is better off without him.

Amari Cooper is a good player but the Cowboys don’t need him right now

Former NFL quarterback turned analyst Dan Orlovsky was asked on Get Up what were his thoughts about Cooper being let go by the Cowboys. “I think two things can be true, that Amari Cooper is a good player and that the Cowboys offensively are better off without him,” Dan responded.

“I think the Cowboys operate out of 12 personnel at their best. One (running) back, two tight ends is twelve. And that’s why I think keeping Dalton Schultz is such a big deal.” Dan praised the play-making ability of Amari Cooper and how he gives the Cowboys an edge down the field and in the endzone.

However, stats show that Cowboys QB Dak Prescott has a better QBR when he throws to tight-end receivers. Prescott-Schultz (95) has a greater passer rating than Tom Brady-Mike Evans (93) and Matthew Stafford-Cooper Kupp (92). This goes to show that Prescott and the Cowboys will benefit a great deal if they have an extra tight end in their arsenal rather than a wide receiver.

“So I think losing Dalton Schultz would be a bigger deal than losing Amari Cooper. They are a better football team with two tight ends on the field,” Dan added. Looks like the Cowboys have done their due diligence and cutting Amari Cooper feels like the best decision for them as a football unit.
