When Lewis Hamilton, a British racing driver who competes in Formula 1 racing become the part owner of an American sports franchise (no less than an NFL team!), a lot of people were first puzzled. But he had a reason behind buying the Denver-based franchise.

Hamilton actually grew up an American football fan. During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Formula 1 driver revealed that he used to play Madden and has been to multiple Super Bowl games. “I remember when I was like nine years old, I used to live on an American air base for a short period of time in the UK, and that was the first time I became aware of it [NFL], and I used to play Madden. I’ve been to many Super Bowls. I’ve been to the first game in the UK,” said Hamilton.

Moreover, he also had another cause to make an investment in a world-class team in NFL, a noble one. “Honestly, it’s such an honor and such an amazing opportunity,” said Hamilton, an everso-fierce advocate of equality. “There’s a real lack of Black ownership [in the NFL], and I’m pushing for diversity constantly. There’s a lot of work to do and I’m really proud to be part of it.”

As Hamilton mentioned, there is indeed a real lack of diversity when it comes to ownership in the NFL. Furthermore, the lack of diversity in management positions leads to a lack of representation in head coaching positions.

In fact, in a league filled with a majority of Black athletes, only three out of 32 teams have a Black head coach. This has been a real issue in the league for many years and more and more black owners like Lewis Hamilton might make a change in that aspect.
