We are just a few weeks away from the much-awaited 2023 NFL Draft. The teams are working overtime to find the perfect fit for their franchise in the draft process. Especially, if the general managers picked the wrong player in the early rounds that will haunt them for years. For instance, the Bears could’ve landed Patrick Mahomes in 2017 but their fans had to put up with Mitchell Trubisky for years due to their GM’s miscalculation.
So, the GMs would always be careful in the early round when there will be plenty of hit-or-miss type of players. This upcoming NFL draft is filled with plenty of talents in all positions.
There’s uncertainty about who would get off the board as the first overall pick. With that in mind, in this article, we’ll take a look at which cornerbacks should be drafted first from the talented 2023 draft class.

No.1 cornerback prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft
There are plenty of talented cornerbacks in the 2023 draft class. However, one among them stands tall, his name is Devon Witherspoon. The six-foot cornerback played collegiate ball at the University of Illinois.
Witherspoon was born on December 11, 2000. Coming out of high school, he wasn’t a highly touted player. In fact, he was considered a zero-star prospect when he finished high school in Pensacola, Florida. However, it’s not because he lacked talent but because he was academically ineligible and had issues in the classroom.
Due to the shortage of D1 offers, the talented young man initially committed to Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. But later, Witherspoon put his head down and raised his grades which led to plenty of D1 offers. In 2019, Witherspoon committed to the Illinois football team and the rest is history. He immediately became a starter for the Fighting Illini. During his 4-year career at Illinois, he registered 5 interceptions and 1 sack.
Devon Witherspoon might be considered undersized by some but his effort and skill make up for it. He is aggressive, physical, and dominating. He has only allowed 8 touchdowns during his college career and was a consensual All-American during his final season. Furthermore, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds.
To be clear, he’s not Sauce Gardner. He can’t just come in and perform at an All-Pro level but he’s clearly the No.1 cornerback prospect in the 2023 Draft class and will most likely be the first CB to get selected in the upcoming Draft. According to reports, the Detroit Lions, who currently hold the sixth-overall pick are interested in Witherspoon and will likely scoop him up in the first round.
