The crowd is on their toes as Alex Ovechkin nears Gordie Howe’s 801 records with each puck-control moment. Just as they anticipate watching the historic moment unfold in front of their eyes, Ovie on Saturday puts on a whole different show on the table.

Usually, his graceful self enamors the viewers, but the recent game showed that when a lion roars others keep out of their way. Although, Toronto Maple Leafs’ defenceman Conor Timmins may have been unaware of the fact given how he dealt with the blow.

Apart from the recent horrible check, Ovechkin once checkered Zdeno Chara into the bench. Maybe his recent plays have been quite docile, as the whole Capital One Arena roared after the Great One put Timmins over the boards and onto the Capitals’ bench.

Alex Ovechkin’s powerful check during the raucous second round injected the arena crowd with a new sense of excitement. It seems that after Ovie lost the face-off against Dylan Strome in the neutral zone he had some pent-up frustrations.

Unlucky for Timmins who just got caught up in front of Ovechkin. Timmins was controlling the puck in the neutral zone when Ovie caught up to him as a surprise and bashed him over the boards, straight into the Capitals’ bench.

His thunderous body check made Timmins pop up and jump back on the ice. Thankfully no serious injuries were incurred. Ovie is just a goal away from breaking Howe’s record. After that, it’ll be a straight-way race up to The Great One.

Ovie will get another chance to aim for Gordie Howe’s record during Monday’s match against the Detroit Red Wings at Capital One Arena. Howe’s son Mark commented, “Records are meant to be broken, and that’s to be No. 2”.

“Anytime you can pass Gordie Howe in anything, I think it’s a major achievement. But I think with Alex and the way he’s spent his career, I’m sure his sights are set a little bit higher.” When asked about Ovie chasing Wayne Gretzky after his dad’s record is overwhelmed, Mark said, “Oh yeah, sure, if he can stay healthy”.

“Maybe two great years, three. It comes down to, for me, I had the aches and pains, but your passion just overtakes everything. … Until Alex hits that point, there’s no reason that he can’t. He’s big and strong and young and he hasn’t had a ton of injuries.”

“The injuries finally caught up to me. But as long as he doesn’t have that and he still has the passion for the game, there’s no reason that he can’t break Wayne’s record.”
