It seems like ‘The Great One’ Wayne Gretzky hopes to keep his magnanimous score record untouched for a little while longer from Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin. After breaking Gordie Howe’s record for goals scored with a single team, Ovechkin is shy of crossing Howe’s all-time goalscorer list.

Now with Howe in sight, catching up to Gretzky seems a feasible dream. After The Great One set his record in stone, NHL and its fans thought no one could possibly come closer or even cross over the legendary player’s record. What now? Ovechkin surely has the means to cross over the record, as the whole NHL world cheers on the ‘Great Eight’.

The Great One versus the Great Eight, surely sounds interesting, as Capitals’ forward Evgeny Kuznetsov further spices up things by revealing Gretzky’s plans to stop Ovechkin from reaching him. He jokingly shared his thought in a recent interview with former Capitals center Andrei Nikolishin.

While explaining Wayne Gretzky’s grand slam plan, Kuznetsov stated,  “I know that Sasha communicates well with him”. “In general, we joked that Gretzky would now be throwing [money] at the teams we were playing against. In 10 years he will be bankrupt–no money.”

While we may even consider a few things to be true, it certainly seems difficult for Gretzky to go bankrupt with $250 million in his pockets. Mark Howe congratulated and wished Alex Ovechkin good luck before Ovie crosses his father’s record. Just like that, there may be a day when the Great One will indeed have to worry about his seat seriously.

Gretzky leads the NHL with an all-time scoring list of 894 goals and 2,857 points. Ovie is now only 102 goals apart according to NHL Public Relations. Ovechkin despite his age is racing toward reaching Gretzky at full speed with no sign of stopping anywhere.

Kuznetsov further stated, “Everyone has their own job on the ice, sometimes you don’t even notice what you’re becoming a part of. Then you look from the side and think, ‘Damn, the dude can beat Gretzky’s record’–and Gretzky was considered an unattainable person all his life”.

The ice rink will wait for the fated day to arrive. Not only is Ovie who’s yearning for the record-breaking day but also his teammates and the National Hockey League fans, as they silently assist and cheer him on his journey. It’s now up to the Great Eight to push forward before his NHL career hits its end.
