Calgary Flames defenceman and alternate captain, Chris Tanev had to retire early from the ice, after taking Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki’s dangerous slapshot to the head. He was helped off the ice after falling down on the ice roughly.
Tanev is quite a dominating character, and for such a person to stay down in the rink surely means danger. His teammates called on the medical unit for a quick check, as for now, the report stays negative.
The Flames lost the match 2-1 against the Canadiens after sorting down to 5 defencemen for the remainder of the game on Monday. During the game, the 32-year-old defenceman tried to block a shot from Suzuki in a 5-3 penalty kill.

Unfortunately, Chris Tanev couldn’t react in time to avoid the slap shot from hitting his head. As the shot hit the side of his head, the defenseman fell on the ice and the whole arena went silent. Even the Bell Center crowd could gauge what went on the ice was a pretty bad hit.
Tanev is sent for reevaluation in Calgary after the test results came in negative. Calgary netminder Jacob Markstrom noted, “It’s tough, I mean, he doesn’t stay down very often”. “So when he stays down, you’re worried. I haven’t talked to him after, but hopefully he’s OK.”
Following the accident, the Canadiens winger Joel Arima asked the referee to whistle the play dead. Even though their team possessed the puck, Joel’s request helped Tanev get the time for a medical check and for their team to recollect themselves.
Calgary coach Darryl Sutter commented, “I just talked to Tanev. I know the feeling and I know the sound”. “I told the players, the toughest guy in the building is Chris Tanev, let’s go do it for him.”
Before his injury, Tanev had 11.43 ice time with 1 shot on net. This season he participated in 23 games with 5 assists, 4 penalty minutes, and a minus-1 rating. He is currently in a 4-year $18 million contract with the Flames with an AAV of $4.5 million.
As per NHL.com, Chris Tanev participated in 676 National Hockey League games, achieving 163 points with 30 goals and 133 assists with Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks. His fans are currently waiting anxiously for any latest reports related to his injury. We hope he gets well soon and skates on ice.
