Connor McDavid is a prolific player undoubtedly, but it appears 2022-23 is one of his best seasons so far. The Edmonton Oilers captain broke Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most power-play points with one franchise. In their game against Winnipeg Jets, the Oilers tasted a 7-5 defeat against their rivals on Saturday.

In the 1981-82 season, ‘The Great One’ Wayne Gretzky set the franchise record with the Oilers after scoring 57 power-play points. Now in the 2022-23 season, team captain Connor McDavid surpassed Gretzy’s record by marking 58 points in assists to Leon Draisaitl. In a single season, McDavid achieved many accolades including his 50 goals milestone.

Though Gretzky scored 59 and 61 points in power-play, those were with Los Angeles Kings. Gretzky’s record which seemed to be unsurmountable is being crossed and chased after in NHL till now, and undoubtedly, McDavid’s score is something to celebrate.

Wayne Gretzky once compared Connor McDavid with Sidney Crosby

Connor McDavid has often been compared with Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, often known as ‘The Next One’. During one of their comparisons, Wayne Gretzky commented, according to ESPN’s Craig Custance, “Sid is still the best player in hockey. That’s a mantle you earn over time.”

“It’s one of those things where you have to earn that title”. When asked if he thinks McDavid would be able to cross ‘The Next One’s record, he noted, “Is Connor a great player? Absolutely. Does Connor have an opportunity to be the next Crosby? Absolutely.

Right now Sidney deserves to be known as the best player in the game. He’s been the best player consistently in his career. He’s won Stanley Cups and he’s won gold medals. Until somebody takes that mantle away from him, he’s still going to hold the crown.

As McDavid crossed the 50 goals milestone for the 1st time in his career, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin praised the former for his incredible feat. He became the 9th active player to achieve the milestone and the fastest to do so. Alex Ovechkin once complimented him on his game noting, “He’s from a different planet”.

The 2022-23 season is still in its process and with the Oilers’ score streak, the team needs to pull through to secure their playoff spot. As the Stanley Cup run bares its fang, NHL teams are competing rigorously to clinch the ticket to the race, with Oilers standing at 34-22-8 score following their loss against the Jets.
