Maybe the fan’s wishes will finally come true as McDavid spoke up on this matter, but he certainly was not the only one to do so. NHL agent Allan Walsh took this opportunity to dig deeper into Bettman, stating how iconic and excited MLB fans were to witness the clash between Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout.

The World Baseball Cassic Championship saw the ideal matchup between Japan’s and the United States’ best players on Tuesday, urging NHL fans to think alike. Hockey fans and stars talk about their missed opportunity to participate in these adrenaline-rush tournaments since 2016.

Baseball fans had a blast these past few weeks seeing Los Angeles Angels’ teammates Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout faceoff against each other with 2 outs in the 9th inning of the Japan-USA final. Ohtani’s shutout Trout to capture the WBC crown and win for Japan with a 3-2 record.

On Wednesday, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid addressed the underlying issues of NHL best-of-best in an interview, stating, “I thought it was really cool”. “It’s what we’ve been asking for in hockey for a long time, right, best-on-best?”

The 2016 World Cup of Hockey in Toronto was the last event that fans and players relished in where they saw McDavid, Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, and Nathan Mackinnon go wild against Team North America.

Fans want to see the iconic pair-up between hockey legends Sidney Crosby, McDavid, and Mackinnon clash against Matthews, Eichel, Patrick Kane, and Matthew Tkachuk. McDavid stated, “Look, everyone is talking about baseball, ‘Did you see Ohtani vs. Trout?’ and that’s what hockey’s been missing for almost a decade now”. “That’s what we’ve been asking for.”

Agent Allan Walsh commented, “See the iconic showdown between Ohtani and Trout at WBC? Gary Bettman and the owners have robbed NHL players and the fans of Olympics and World Cups. A generation of NHL stars have never represented their countries best on best. It’s such a lost opportunity for everyone.”

The NHL players last participated in the 2014 Olympics, skipping the 2018 and 2022 events. Furthermore, in November it was announced that the hockey World Cup scheduled in 2024 has been pushed back to 2025 due to Russia’s war with Ukraine, according to NHL and NHLPA.
