Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid has yet again etched another history. He reached the milestone of 140th point in the 2022-23 season, since the 1995-96 and 1997-88 era. Only three NHL legends have been able to get to the threshold, namely, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Jaromir Jagr.
His 140th point came during the Oilers’ 5-4 victory game against the Arizona Coyotes on Monday at Mullet Arena. McFluff became the first player to reach the milestone since the 1995-96 season when legendary Pittsburgh Penguins Lemieux and Jagr played.
He even touched Gretzky who scored the record back in the 1987-88 season. The 4x Art Ross Trophy winner scored 140 points in 74 games with 60 goals and 80 assists in the 2022-23 season. He also enjoyed his 60th OT goal mark not too long ago in a game against Coyotes.
Coach Jay Woodcroft praises Connor McDavid on his milestone achievement
According to the Associated Press, Connor McDavid stated, “I kind of felt like I was pressing for the 60th all night”. “I was disappointed not to bury [the first one]. You are not going to get many better looks than that. It is not every day you get two breakaways back-to-back like that.”
“Getting 60, a lot of great players in the past have done it, and it feels good to join that list.” Following the team’s victory, coach Jay Woodcroft noted, “I saw someone that was competitive right from the puck drop”. “Connor’s at a different evolutionary stage in his game right now, and I think everyone saw that here tonight.”
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins played a major role in the game as he scored the tiebreaker in 7:55, helping the team snatch a spot for the Western Conference Playoff berth. Zach Hyman talked about the play in the 2nd and 3rd periods, “We thought we had a real strong second (period)“.
“We were up in the third and we let it slip away. But we were able to find a way to get it back and win the game so that’s all that matters. But, obviously we want to clean that up.” Although the team won, they all celebrated McDavid’s performance.
Oilers head coach, Woodcroft once praised Connor McDavid, saying, “His drive is insatiable. It’s what gets him up in the morning. It’s what he dedicates his life to. We get to see those highlight-reel goals, but most people don’t realize he’s in the gym right after the game, doing things to prepare his body for the next time.”
“He’s making sure he gets enough rest and what he puts into his body, his fuel, he’s ultra-disciplined.” “Every moment in his day is geared to being the best he can be. We’re in the NHL and a lot of players do this. But this is the best player in the world. He takes that to a different degree,” according to Community Press.
