Toronto Maple Leafs’ goalie Matt Murray once again suffers from an injury during their game against Original 6 team Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. Just 16:16 in the first period, Murray had to be pulled off the ice after he collided with Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond.
This was Murray’s third injury suffered as a Leafs’ player in the 2022-23 season. According to Sheldon Keefe, Ilya Samsonov will be taking on the netminding position till the veteran goalie returns. Following the game on Sunday night, Samsonov spoke to the media regarding Murray’s injury.
He stated how heartbroken he is to once again find Murray out of the roster, “I’m sad. This is hard. Hard for him. Hard for [his] family, yeah, first one, and hard for team. It’s hard for us. It’s third one. We don’t know long-term or whatever. Third injury is really hard and I’m so sad about it”.

Matt Murray suffered concussion issues throughout his professional career, and the Sunday night collision weighed on his injury list further. Murray’s absence on ice will leave a hole in Leafs’ lineup as Stanley Cup season approaches after the latest 2-5 loss against Red Wings.
During the first period of the game, Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond accidentally slid into the back of Murray’s leg, causing the goalie to lose his footing. Murray flew midair landing heavily on his head on ice in an awkwardly dangerous position.
His teammates are praying for the goalie’s fast return, although coach Sheldon Keefe is yet to give out any update regarding the matter. Keefe noted, “I have no update. We will get you for you probably on Tuesday”.
Keefe said he wasn’t sure if Murray was called off the ice by a concussion spotter or to be safe in case of further injuries. “I am not exactly sure. I was told it was mandatory that he had to come off of the ice”. When asked about the current situation, Keefe said Ilya Samsonov will take on his role during the meantime.
“I don’t know. It was in the hands of the trainers. They’ll deal with it. He’ll bounce back, and Sammy will go”. Even back from 2022, October 13 to November 14, Murray didn’t take on ice due to a groin injury. He also missed a 17-game stretch from January 17 to March 4 with an ankle injury.
As of now, Murray has recorded a .903 save percentage with a 3.01 goals-against-average in 26 games, going with a 14-8-2 record. In his career, he has appeared in 272 games with a 2.79 goals-against-average, and a .910 save percentage, carrying a 146-86-24 record.
