Veteran goalie Jonathan Quick is beyond furious about his trade to Blue Jackets. Not only did the netminder express his feeling about retiring as a Kings player, but he was caught off guard by his surprise trade. Quick received the trade news following a 6-5 shootout win against Winnipeg Jets.

The overnight trade meant the goalie had to return to LA with his now-former team in an awkward situation. Fans are still baffled by the news and it seems the 37-year goalie is far from thrilled. Apart from sending Quick, the Kings are also transferring a 1st round pick to the Blue Jackets as part of the package.

The Blue Jackets traded Vladislav Gavrikov and goalie Joonas Korpisalo. According to insider Frank Seravalli, “To say Jonathan Quick is unhappy with the trade, I’m told, is “an understatement.”

“The entire #LAKings team was a bit down after the game, a win, and you could understandably see it in Anze Kopitar’s face after a 4-goal night. Tough deal, Kings trading a franchise legend.”

The trade of goalie Jonathan Quick from LA signaled an end of an era. Following his NHL Draft in 2005, he played with the Kings only, winning several accolades. In 2012 and 2014 he won the Stanley Cup Championships along with Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP 2012.

He also won the William M. Jennings Trophy in 2014, and 2018. During his career in LA, he made 743 NHL game appearances with a save percentage of .911 and 2.46 GAA. Quick who should’ve ended his career as a Kings netminder, ended up getting caught in a blockbuster trade.

Reports emerged that Quick prior to any decision, expressed how he wanted to continue his career with the team. Patrick Johnston of the Province revealed that the Kings didn’t want to resign the 37-year-old goalie so they went for the best option. Regardless of the decision, the team didn’t inform Quick of a possible trade.

Apart from Columbus Blue Jackets, the Vegas Golden Knights appeared as the front runners of the trade. After the 2022-23 season, Quick would’ve landed in free agency following his 10-year $58 million trade end. Jonathan Quick’s trade has brought in many furious reactions including reactions from exNHLers and experts in the field.

According to HockeyFeed, Andy Strickland, a veteran reporter noted, “The issue isn’t the Kings trading Jonathan Quick. LA needed cap space and they need to upgrade their goaltending. But blindsiding him and not giving him any indication that this could possibly happen probably wasn’t right. There’s always a right way to treat people.”

LA Kings GM Rob Blake noted,  “We felt that this type of move addressed the two situations that we felt needed to be addressed on the team”. “Jonathan Quick is the best goalie to ever play in this organization…”

“…let alone in the league, and he’s taken us, with a handful of players, the organization, to the highest level in two different times and throughout his career”. “We were so thankful for what he’s been able to do for this organization, as a player, as a person, him and his family and his kids. We’re indebted to what he’s been able to do for us.”
