Toronto Maple Leafs newest forward Noel Acciari wanted to spice things up for the team but instead got clobbered by NY Islanders winger Matt Martin. Engaging in a fight is quite common in NHL and more so if it’s about hyping their own team.
Regardless, it’s wise to carefully choose one’s opponent, or getting shadowed is always a possibility. It seems this exact scenario played out at UBS Arena on Tuesday. Not only did the Islanders beat out Leafs in a 7-2 victory, their player also got the upper hand in the bout.
Noel Acciari dropped the gloves with Matt Martin in 3rd period at 3.20 as the Islanders lead the Leafs 6-2. Matt easily overpowered Noel but paused and let go of the forward to honor ‘The Code’. NHL officials intervened, taking Noel to the penalty box. NY Islanders now carry a score of 37-27-8, whereas Leafs fly with 42-19-9.

The 3rd-period bout wasn’t Noel Acciari’s first one in Tuesday’s game. Earlier in the first period Islanders Brock Nelson took a hit from Acciari in the corner. Nelson left the game shortly, joining another of their missing teammate Mathew Barzal.
Nelson curled up and waited for a few moments before getting up and skating toward the Leafs’ tunnel. No further update has been given by their coach Lane Lambert. Leafs’ coach Sheldon Keefe said, “We didn’t generate enough.”
“We had some really good looks that their goalie made good saves on, but consistently, we didn’t challenge enough to the inside.” “If you are playing against this team, if you don’t do that, you are going to have a night like this.”
He spoke on Willian Nylander’s performance, as earlier he smacked him with some truth bombs, “I thought Willy was really skating today. He didn’t get to the net much, which not many guys did, but I thought he carried the puck well. He transported it well. He looked a lot like the guy we had seen all season.
Zach Parise, who helped the Islanders win their 3rd consecutive game talked about their game, “We like the way we play”. “You don’t want to get too caught up in watching the scoreboard, but we want to take care of what we have to do.”
Mitch Marner spoke about their loss, “We weren’t getting enough pucks directly to the net, we were trying to play too much”. “They won a lot more battles. When they got the pucks, they took them to the net and got bodies there. When they got their clean looks, they didn’t miss.”
