Jokes between Toronto Maple Leafs forward’s Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner almost turn into a nightmare, as the winger nearly losses his golden puck. After a smashing 4-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings, Marner was in a definitive celebratory mood until it got destroyed by Matthews.

Matthews trolled the 25-year-old for the act of throwing his puck into the Scotiabank Arena crowd. What could have been a more fitting gift than the puck which earned Marner his 500th point? Unfortunately for him, Matthews was already aware of his thoughts.

Before Marner could reach for the puck, Matthews scooped it up from the ice only to throw it into the arena crowd. Though it was meant for fun, the color of Marner’s face turned pale. Shortly after Matthews tossed the puck to their trainer behind the bench, saving his teammate from having a mini-heart attack.

Mitch Marner scored his 153rd Nationa Hockey League goal during the 2nd period against Detroit Red Wings while celebrating his entry into the 500th-point club with Leafs. He shortly followed Auston Matthews who earlier joined the club in a shootout loss to St. Louis Blues.

Marner’s 15th goal of the 2022-23 season gave him his 500th career point tying the game 1-1, ultimately leading in the team’s 4-1 win. In the 2022-23 season, Marner has a collective of 15 goals, and 34 assists in 49 points in 41 games played. His total career points stand at 504 with 153 goals and 351 assists in 468 games.

Marner also received an invitation to the  NHL All-Star Game which will begin next month in South Florida. He set a franchise record by scoring at least 1 point in each of the 23 games. Marner stated, “It’s cool, a couple of things you dream of in this league (is) winning that Stanley Cup and trying to get to the All-Star Game”.

“It’s a cool accomplishment, but it wouldn’t have happened without a lot of these guys in this room.” Just like Marner, Matthews also embedded his name in the Leafs’ record book after scoring his 500th NHL point. He became the fastest in the franchise to set the record in just 445 games.

As David Alter stated, “Auston Matthews picks up career point #500 with secondary assist on (William) Nylander goal”. Apart from Matthews and Marner, the players who set the 500th record in 495 games were Mats Sundin and Rick Vaive, according to Si Fan Nation.

Matthews commented after his glorious achievement, “I think there’s definitely some special meaning behind it with the history of this organization and the players that have come and worn this jersey before us”. “I’ve been fortunate every year to play with some great players and have a great team around us. So it definitely means a lot.”
