It seems Boston Bruins broadcaster Jack Edwards has finally dug his own hole after fat-shaming Tampa Bay Lightning’s winger Pat Maroon. The fat-shaming incident took place during the 1st period of the game. Jack talked about Maroon’s weight on live broadcasts, which is against etiquette.

Nevertheless, it seems “Big Rig” has gotten a lot of supporters behind his back. He not only hit back at Jack in an elegant way but also gained supporters from the NHL world. After all, this was not the first case where Jack jokingly commented on a player’s health.

Back in the day when the then-Dallas Stars defenceman Roman Polak suffered an injury and was taken off-ice on a stretcher, Jack commented, “a little bit of bad hockey karma”. Even in 2020, he couldn’t shake off his habit of commenting and once again took a dab at Andrei Svechnikov’s knee injury.

As for Andrei’s injury, Jack commented, “You poke the bear, you take your chances”. This retort to an injured player called for the Hurricanes publicly criticize the broadcaster. His recent dig at Pat Maroon turned out opposite of his expectations.

Maroon, who is a beloved player not only to the team but also across the fan base, took this opportunity to slay down the commentator while taking the high road. Jack commented, “That was Day 1 of training camp”. “I’ve got a feeling he’s had a few more pizzas between then and now.”

“(Intermittent) fasting for Pat Maroon is like four hours without a meal. But hey, three Cups in a row, who can argue with his formula?” To rile him up more, NESN’s Andy Brickley weighed in as well. He joked that Pat’s listed weight was prior to his pre-game meal.

On Wednesday, Big Rig got his chance at revenge as he posted on Twitter, “In support of those struggling with mental health, bullying and body image I am making a $2,000 donation in the name of @RealJackEdwards to @TampaBayThrives and I encourage @TBLightning and @NHL fans to join me,” inviting the NHL fans to join in too.

Ex-NHLer Bobby Ryan tweeted, “Pat Maroon doesn’t care about Jack Edwards”. “He’s been ‘fat Pat’ since we were 7 years old. He has three cups, a bunch of money, and a beautiful family. My tweet lasted longer than his thoughts about some announcer calling him big. He’s the big rig. Doesn’t change his day!”

Even Lightning captain Steven Stamkos replied, “Well done Patty”. “Donating now!” This action didn’t only prove the 3-time Stanley Cup winner’s intelligence but also gave the chance aggrieved by the commentator to take a dig at him. Pat, lovingly known as Big Rig is undoubtedly a beloved player of the team and the group regardless of his weight. His accomplishments speak all.
