NHL’s involvement with the Trans Ice Hockey Organization created waves on social media. These sensitive issues blew the internet as Twitter voiced split opinions. Recently the match that the organization held with 80 trans people and non-binary people participating, has made the results publicly known.
In a video released from the match, the fans got to see a bigger opponent smack a smaller opponent who in turn falls against the boards. The victim suffered a concussion from the incident, once again making Twitter go crazy with comments on who was in the right and vice versa.
A transgender man came in contact with a trans woman as the latter went sliding to the boards. Though the victim later made light of the moment and didn’t comment on anyone pushing or intentionally whacking him. It’s still unclear whether it was an accident or an intentional attack.
Trans Hockey Organization’s recent statement on NHL once again created waves on social media
On Wednesday, the Trans Ice Hockey organization issued a statement noting, that the National Hockey League is only “promoting and financing” as part of the “Accelerating Diversity & Inclusion” initiative. The league is not directly linked with the team in any other way.
Furthermore, the initiative was taken to make hockey “more welcoming, inclusive, accessible, and socially conscious”. The Team Trans Drafts Tournament that took place last month was an organization-sponsored event, with no involvement of the NHL.
Though earlier, the League did support their cause and noted on social media, “We support any teammate, coach or fan who brings heart, energy and passion to the rink”.
The Twitter post made by the Trans Hockey Organization read as, “In regards to the multiple articles circulating about our Team Trans Draft Tournament held on November 19th and 20th in Middleton, WI, we want to clear up a few statements that do not align with how this tournament played out”.
“While the NHL is supportive of providing accessibility to all organizations that love hockey, this tournament was organized by Team Trans – NOT the NHL, and was done with intentionality to create teams with even skill levels.”
Quillette writer Jonathan Kay reported that during the tournament a player crashed into boards and suffered a concussion. The medical action was taken after a 17-minute delay. The Trans Hockey team issued a statement on Wednesday, “During the championship game, a player was injured”.
“Everyone who steps on the ice to play this sport knows there is a risk of injury. The injured player has recovered, and there is no ill will between the two players involved.” Hockey is a game that involves physicality on ice. We often come across incidents like this in NHL.
The only issue that blew up the incident was that a smaller frame person got hurt by someone larger than their size. No one actually can tell who to blame, as the victim himself said, “I’ve been debating if I should post everything about the @teamtransicehockey draft tournament, given the sensitive content, but here goes…”
According to NyPost.com, the victim continued, “I Had an amazing time with the wonderful people at the exclusive all trans draft tournament in Middleton, WI the weekend before Thanksgiving”.
“…this is where the sensitive content comes: once out I was playing the puck, and I took a very odd fall into the boards, in which I needed medical attention to make sure my neck and extremities were okay”. He further stated that he’d “do it all over again” if given opportunity.
