Nick Kyrgios has not been in action since the season-ending ATP Finals in November 2022, aside from a brief one-match appearance in Stuttgart in June last year. Wrist and knee surgeries have kept him sidelined longer than he wished for, though he has quickly taken to being a commentator and analyst while on the sidelines.

Kyrgios returned to action last month at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown at Forest Hills Stadium in New York. Now, in an Instagram Live, the Australian has announced that he is targeting a comeback to the ATP Tour and is eyeing the 2025 Australian Open.

In January this year, Nick Kyrgios wrote an op-ed for The Sydney Morning Herald where he stated that he was at a crossroads in his career. He said he was contemplating retirement and declared himself unavailable for the Paris Olympics.

However, the 29-year-old soon took to social media to quash all speculation about his retirement. He said that the rumors were “absolute nonsense” and stated that he’d be back in action, though he did not mention when.

The Canberra native, in his latest interaction with fans on social media, stated that he hopes to play a few events to get into shape before the Melbourne Major. Kyrgios doesn’t have a great record at his home Grand Slam, with his best singles performance being a quarterfinal appearance in 2015. In the doubles, however, he won the title in 2022 while partnering compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.

During his recovery, Nick Kyrgios was unsure of ever making a comeback

Australian ace Nick Kyrgios made his long-awaited return to tennis at the US Open Mixed Madness 2024 charity event at the Arthur Ashe Stadium last month. He teamed up with Naomi Osaka in the mixed doubles matches and the pair were beaten by Amanda Anisimova and Taylor Fritz.

Kyrgios then took part in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) event at the Forest Hills Stadium in New York. Speaking on the sidelines of that event, he admitted that he had serious doubts about making a comeback to tennis.

I’ve been putting in some serious work, every single day back home. I didn’t know if I was going to play tennis again with the state of my wrist. It was literally conversations of never playing again.

Despite uncertainty about his fitness, Kyrgios beat Casper Rudd 17-8, 21-9, 15-11 in New York, showcasing pretty good levels for someone who has been out of action for a long time. His serve, especially, was on point, averaging 164 km/h in the first quarter.
