Daniil Medvedev joked that he will take drastic measures to beat Carlos Alcaraz next time they face each other after losing to the Spaniard at the China Open. The Russian star was swept aside by Alcaraz in the semifinals in Beijing on Tuesday (October 1).

Medvedev was seeking his first win over Alcaraz since the 2023 US Open. Alcaraz has beaten the World No. 5 twice this year, including a victory in the semifinals at Wimbledon. Medvedev’s plan against Alcaraz failed to materialize as he lost 7-5, 6-3.

After the loss, Medvedev was seen talking to Alcaraz in the net while shaking hands. When asked about what he told Alcaraz, he said that he told the 21-year-old that he would dress like Botic Van de Zandschulp the next time he faced Alcaraz on the court.

I told Carlos next match I’m going to paint my hair blond and put ‘Botic’ here. Maybe this can help. As I say, today I played pretty well. I don’t see how I could beat him today on a given day today. Yeah, next match I need to try something. Maybe throw him off a little bit. But it’s a joke, of course.

Van de Zandschulp claimed a surprise straight-set victory over Alcaraz in the second round of the US Open. The Dutch star is the last player to beat Alcaraz, as he has gone on to win his last eight matches since that defeat.

Daniil Medvedev picks “good positives” from defeat to Carlos Alcaraz at the China Open

Daniil Medvedev has admitted that despite the defeat to Carlos Alcaraz, there were a lot of “good positives” to pick. The Russian fought hard but was outplayed by Alcaraz in key moments of the match.

Tough match for me because I felt that I played really well. I felt that, yeah, there were a lot of good, positive things for me. At the same time, yeah, it’s very, very tough to play Carlos when he’s in top form. So yeah, I played a pretty good match. I lost. That’s not that often it happens to me.

In the second set, Medvedev struggled with discomfort in his left leg and needed two medical timeouts for treatment. The Russian tried to fight his way back into the match but Alcaraz took control to seal the victory with his fourth match point.

Alcaraz is set to face Jannik Sinner in the China Open final. On the other hand, Medvedev will lose a hundred ranking points after failing to replicate his runner-up finish from last year. He has yet to win a title since May last year despite reaching two finals this season.
