Milkha Singh‘s wife Nirmal Singh has succumbed to COVID-19 infection. The couple was admitted last week after a drop in their oxygen levels. While the hospital authorities had earlier given a statement sharing that both Milkha and Nirmal were stable and improving. Nirmal’s death has been confirmed by the sprinter’s family.

We are deeply saddened to inform you that Mrs Nirmal Milkha Singh passed away after a valiant battle against COVID at 4 PM today,” the statement by Milkha Singh’s family read.

Nirmal Kaur had contracted COVID-19 days after her husband got the infection, and was in the ICU of the Fortis hospital with fluctuating oxygen requirements, a medical bulletin issued by Fortis last week said.

Earlier union sports minister Kiren Rijiju had took to Twitter to clarify following rumors of Milkha’s death. The iconic Indian sprinter had tested positive for COVID-19 last month. Milkha was fortunately said to be in ‘high spirits’ and completely asymptomatic.

The hospital yesterday shared an update regarding the ace sprinter’s health. “Milkha Singh’s health is fine and improving, but he is still in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit),” said a spokesperson for the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).
