- Sean McVay appeared visibly unhappy with the Rams' selection of quarterback Ty Simpson.
- Reports suggest general manager Les Snead influenced Simpson's draft invitation due to family ties.
- McVay later expressed excitement about adding Simpson while emphasizing Matthew Stafford's leadership role.
Several videos began circulating on the internet in the aftermath of the Los Angeles Rams’ selection of quarterback Ty Simpson. Head coach Sean McVay did not seem to be happy about the pick.
To put it simply, the Rams’ starting quarterback, Matthew Stafford, won the league’s best player award last year. Despite being 38, he can still play a few more years at the top level. So, taking a quarterback in the top 20 confused a lot of people. And judging by McVay’s facial expressions in those videos, he had a different player in his mind at pick no. 13.
McVay looked grumpier when Peter Schrager asked him to explain what went on behind the scenes leading up to Simpson’s selection. The Super Bowl winner did not mince his words.
It didn’t get a lot of attention, glad that we’re talking about it.
McVay replied
Sean McVay is so annoyed by the Ty Simpson pick still:

It seemed annoyed by the unwanted attention. And for good reason. There have been attempts by the media to spin the narrative in a different direction.
According to some reports, general manager Les Snead played a key role in Simpson even getting an invitation for day one of the draft. The reason? Well, apparently Snead has good ties to Simpson’s father, Jason Simpson, who also happens to be the head coach of the University of Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks football team. Snead even urged Ty to declare for the draft. Of course, these are all fleeting claims, with zero to little evidence to back them up.
Anyways, Simpson is now a Los Angeles Ram and will compete with Stetson Bennett for the backup job behind Stafford, whose contract ends after the 2026 season. But make no mistake, the Rams, especially McVay, will try to convince the veteran to stay with the team for a few more years.
Peter Schrager provides an update on how Sean McVay feels about Ty Simpson
So it turns out McVay and the Rams had planned to take Simpson at some point in the draft. That’s at least how Schrager viewed the situation. According to his hypothesis, the Arizona Cardinals were the firm favorites to take Simpson; the question was when?

Mock drafts projected the Cardinals to trade back down to take Simpson, but it did not happen. Arizona exercised its third overall pick to select Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, which opened the door for the Rams to swoop in and take the Bama alum.
According to Schrager, the Rams communicated with Stafford before making the pick official to avoid following the same path as the Atlanta Falcons a couple of years earlier. Moreover, Simpson going 13th overall isn’t a waste of a top 20 pick because they already secured a first-rounder when they traded for Trent McDuffie earlier in the year.
So, Schrager believes, even if McVay may appear a bit disjointed by the entire arrangement, he is still a fan of Ty Simpson.
The thinking, the secrecy, the and communication behind the Rams' selection of Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick.

Sean McVay breaks the air about the Ty Simpson selection
Schrager hit a bullseye with his theory. McVay clarified that he is content with the Rams taking Simpson.
I couldn’t be more excited about being able to add him, but also understanding how much I love Matthew Stafford, how respectful you want to always be, to just the way things can be interpreted. And so, uh, the demeanor would have been, you know, stoic by nature because you are excited, but by no means, you know, it is Matthew’s football team. Excited to be able to add Ty.
Stafford said (H/T: Rams Roundtable)
“It’s Matthew’s football team,” a line Simpson must heed once he sets foot in the Rams facility. He is not going to get many chances this year or maybe even next year, depending on whether the Rams extend Stafford’s contract. But before that, Simpson has to prove that he’s not Sam Bradford 2.0 and that the Rams made the right choice by selecting him high in the draft.
