Fans of the NFL are already looking forward to the Olympic games to be held in Los Angeles in 2028 as they will get to see their sport be a part of the international games. The excitement was evident when the NFL shared a promotional video showing superstar and Global Flag Football Ambassador QB Jalen Hurts in it.

With him and fellow star QB Patrick Mahomes showing interest, fans will be excited with what is to come. Except, current Olympic Flag Football quarterback Darrell “Housh” Doucette is not impressed.

I think it’s disrespectful that they just automatically assume that they’re able to just join the Olympic team because of the person that they are. Give the guys who helped this game get to where it’s at their respect. They still have to go out there and compete. It’s not that we need these guys. Because we’re already great with who we have.
Speaking with Ramon Antonio Vargas of The Guardian, Darrell Doucette said

He basically shut down the notion that NFL stars can come in and claim a spot just because they are great at 11v11 football. Doucette wants them to compete for a spot. He was clear that this is not like how it is in the NBA where one can assemble the 12 best players and form a team and win. Flag football is different in a lot of ways. Therefore, he feels the likes of Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes or Joe Burrow should not be automatic Olympians.

Even though Jalen Hurts was selected as the global Flag Football Ambassador, Doucette wants him and others to work for spots. If they earn their spot, then it will be justified. But even then, Darrell Doucette is confident that the players currently on Team USA Flag Football are good enough.

Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes do not stand a chance to make flag football team

Doucette might have a point here. As anyone who has watched a flag football game should know that the needs are different. NFL stars such as Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes are not agile or bendy like flag football players. That game requires a different level of agility and short bursts of speed which NFL stars seldom possess.

Some wide receivers and cornerbacks might be able to crack the team, but for the rest of them, it is a question mark. Therefore, to make it on the Team USA roster, Hurts and Mahomes might have to train differently. Then only can they shed weight and be flexible enough. But then, it will be taxing on their bodies as they will then have to regain that weight and strength to play in the NFL.

With more than 30 countries already playing in the World Championships, Team USA cannot take a chance. They have to keep their reputation intact as the originator of American football. For that, they cannot afford to go around pleasing 20-something athletes earning millions of dollars.
