Teddy Riner was born on the 7th of April in 1989 in Les Abymes, Guadeloupe in France to parents Moise Riner and Marie-Pierre Riner. Guadeloupe is an insular region in France. From a very young age, Riner was well versed in several sports like Football, Tennis and Basketball, but he took interest in Judo due to the fact that it was an individual sport.

Besides this, Riner has also won the IJF Masters Gold 4 times, IJF Grand Slam 6 times and IJF Grand Prix 6 times. He dominated the scene during his junior years as well, winning the World Juniors Championships twice in 2006 and 2008. He has also won the European version of the same twice (in 2005 and 2006).
