There is a saying that states desperate times call for desperate measures. Every once in a while, a person finds themselves with no option left rather than taking an extreme step. Mexican diver Diego Balleza found himself in a similar situation. The athlete has now launched an OnlyFans account after facing some financial troubles.
A major reason for this has been the dispute between World Aquatics and Mexico’s sports head Ana Guevara. Since January, the national sports commission had stopped providing financial help to the aquatic athletes. This was because of the development of Kiril Todorov, the former President of the Mexican Federation.
Todorov was suspended as the Mexican Swimming Federation failed to comply with the governing body’s standards. Guevara openly refused to recognize the commission. The former Olympic silver medalist then decided to cut the allowance to athletes related to Aquatic events. This has led Balleza to the OnlyFans platform.
“It occurred to me to open it because you always looking for a way to make income. You can upload whatever you want in there, it’s valid content,” Balleza told the Associated Press. He further delved into the experience of that account and informed how the people have been good and respectful towards him.
Mexican athletes forced to resort to extreme measures to gather funds
Whether the move by Diego Balleza is ethical or unethical is up for debate. OnlyFans, an online platform where people share their images and videos has been a subject of debate. Several athletes have faced heat from experts for portraying a wrong image to the younger audience. Balleza claimed that this was the last resort he had.
The 28-year-old diver is reported to have gained over $1,708 through the platform. He has uploaded over 136 photos and 26 videos of him. The Mexican athlete is currently charging $15 as a monthly fee. He however is not alone in this economic struggle. His partner during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Kevin Berlin took another step to secure some funds for prepartion of the next games in 2024.
Berlin, with the help of family and close friends, has opened a coffee brand. The athlete has named it ‘Olimpiada Caffe,’ which translated to ‘Olympic Coffee.’ The duo of Balleza and Berlin will now head together to compete in the World Championships in Japan. They will be seeking to earn spots for Mexico in the 2024 Paris Games.
While Balleza and Berlin found a way to secure some money, other swimming members were forced to sell their kits on social media. This development has certainly raised questions over the Mexican Federation. How will their body react to this situation will be interesting to see as the drama continues.
