Over the past few months, the issue regarding the involvement of transgender athletes in women’s sports has exploded. Athletes in the form of Riley Gaines and Paula Scanlan have emerged as top figures in this battle. The two former NCAA swimmers have taken huge steps in ensuring safety for women while competing against trans athletes. Scanlan recently attacked Rep. Maria Cervania over her “insecurities” regarding locker room comments.
Gaines and Scanlan have previously testified before the US Senate and fired shots at the NCAA and Lia Thomas. The inclusion of Thomas, the trans-athlete in their women’s swimming team, was something the duo was unaware of. They would go on to explain their side of the story and express the horrors of sharing locker room with Thomas.
Rep Cervania was seen speaking on this locker room issue. She would go on to state that she was “disheartened” by the narrative that is being going on. The democrat further added how the locker room was meant to be a place where people came together to share a common goal.
These comments of hers were not well received. The Independent Women’s Voice (IWV) would pick up the video of her and slam her. The body would express their disappointment with her and took a swipe at her. “We are disheartened by your lack of regard for safety,” they said in their tweet.

The tensions regarding the inclusion of trans athletes in women sports are at an all-time high. Several states across the US have taken measures to ban these athletes from competing against girls in school and college events. Recently Texas Governor Greg Abbott was seen with Paula Scanlan and Riley Gaines while passing a bill.
Scanlan has emerged as another towering figure in this battle. The 23-year-old would attack Rep Maria Cervania over her “insecurities” locker room comments. “The women’s locker room exists for our safety and to protect us,” she tweeted out. Before this, she added she was uncomfortable in sharing the locker room with Thomas because the female body is different from the male body.
Scanlan though was not the only one to take a jab at Rep. Cervania. Tennis great Martina Navratilova would also attack her over this. “WT heck?- seriously? You want you 10 year old daughter exposed to a naked biological male?,” she tweeted.
It now remains to be seen what further impact this statement by the US democrat will have on the athletics world. Several sporting bodies including the UCI, the cycling governing body have laid out bans on the participation of trans athletes and have changed their rules. This along with the proposed Title IX changes by the Joe Biden administration are likely to bring in more changes in the future of women’s sports.
