The story of the involvement of transgender athletes in women’s sports has another chapter. This topic has been one of the major discussion points across the United States this year. On Sunday, trans fencer Liz Kocab defeated 14-time world champion Marja-Liisa Someroja during the 2023 FIE Veteran Fencing World Championships.

This was the second time Kocab had won in the 70+ age category. After the victory, the fencer would express the reason for their participation in the event. Since her win, she has been criticized by several users. Women’s advocate Riley Gaines has now joined in on the act and slammed her for this. She would call her an “entitled cheat.”

Gaines has become one of the most popular faces across the country this year for her actions. The former NCAA swimmer has been fighting for women’s safety and trying to get the involvement of trans athletes in women’s sports banned. It was likely that she would soon join the others in blasting the fencer and her team.

For the unversed, Kocab has won several championships during her career while being an eight-time world champion. It is though unclear when Kocab transitioned from male to female. Additionally, he was earlier known as Greg when competing for the Detroit Mercy in the 1972 NCAA National Championship.

Riley Gaines calls out Liz Kocab on social media

Ever since she had to deal with Lia Thomas at the NCAA Championship, Riley Gaines has been on a hunt. The 23-year-old Kentucky native has been a highly active member on social media and has called out various organizations and trans athletes. This time she called out fencer Liz Kocab as she won at the Veteran Fencing World Championships.

One of the key reasons for this widespread backlash by Gaines and others has been the “unfair advantage” trans athletes possess according to them. The debate regarding “biological” men has been widely discussed across the US and several states have introduced laws and bills to prevent another repeat of Gaines and Thomas story.

While taking to her X (formerly called Twitter) Gaines would hit out at Kocab. The swimmer would first introduce how the fencer was and later wrote, “Winning a title as a male in the women’s category doesn’t make you a champion. It makes you an entitled cheat.”

Meanwhile, USA Fencing has come in support of Kocab after this backlash. In their defense, the body claimed that she did not break any rules and followed the standard FIE procedure programmed for trans athletes to compete in the junior, senior, and veteran categories.

Kacob will now prepare to advance to the team event where two fencers from the age category of 50s, 60s, and 70+ will compete for the gold medal. Her performance now is likely to be witnessed as much as the drama regarding trans athletes’ inclusion in women’s sports intensifies even further.
