Patrick Mahomes Unlikely to Play in Preseason as Chiefs Take Cautious Approach

Andy Reid could sit Patrick Mahomes during the preseason to give other quarterbacks a chance to showoff their skills.

Andy Reid provided a disappointing update on his star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He may not play Mahomes in the preseason.

Mahomes’ last appearance in a Chiefs uniform came during KC’s Week 15 clash against the Los Angeles Chargers. The 30-year-old suffered an ACL and MCL tear, which required surgery.

Within five months, Mahomes was doing private training. He even attended the OTAs and the minicamp, fast-tracking his first team return. Although he remains on course to start in week one, head coach Andy Reid would prefer to keep him on the bench during the Chiefs’ three preseason friendlies.

Listen, there’s a pretty good chance I don’t play [Patrick]. The percentages are leaning that way. I don’t know if I’ll play him the second or the third game. I don’t know that, but percentages are probably leaning against doing that and letting the other guys… we’ve got new people [Justin Fields and Garrett Nusmeier] in those other positions behind him that need some work. The more reps they get, the better.

Andy Reid said after Friday’s practice

The Chiefs were in complete chaos last year. Mahomes only managed to deliver six wins before picking up a season-ending ACL injury. The Chiefs lost the following games and ended the campaign with a 6-11 record. For the first time since Mahomes became the starter in KC, the Chiefs have not only missed out on the AFC West crown but also failed to qualify for the playoffs. Only the Raiders, with three wins, had a worse record in the AFC West.

Mahomes had 315 completions for 3587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 14 games last season. He also had 422 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns.

Mahomes’ injury happened while he was scrambling to get some extra yardage. While he won’t stop using his legs, the Super Bowl winner will lean more on new running back Kenneth Walker to get those important yards on the ground.

Could Patrick Mahomes be snubbed from the NFL All-Decade team?

It won’t be long before the NFL releases the 2010 All-Decade Team. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell published a provisional players list of those who could be part of the All-Decade Team. Barnwell chose Bills quarterback Josh Allen over Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Barnwell wrote:

Allen would be the quarterback on the All-Decade first team if it were to be released tomorrow, although there would be at least some debate about instead awarding it to Lamar Jackson or Patrick Mahomes. Every single All-Decade quarterback is enshrined in the Hall besides Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers, who will be first-ballot entrants. Regardless, Allen will join them.

FOX Sports analyst and staunch Chiefs supporter Nick Wright could not fathom Barnwell would pick Allen over Mahomes, who has won three of the five Super Bowls he has played in since 2017. Allen’s biggest achievement by far has been his MVP win in 2024.

Bill, you know how much I love you! And I don’t think you’re biased against the Chiefs. But calling Josh Allen he QB of the 2020s over Mahomes is such an unfathomable [and legitimately indefensible] opinion that I thought the initial screen grab was AI generated.

Mahomes and Allen have gone head-to-head on five different occasions. Allen holds the advantage in the regular season with a 5-1 record. Mahomes, meanwhile, has dominated Allen and the Bills in the playoffs (4-1). The next instalment of this rivalry will kick off on November 26 at the Bills’ new stadium.
