Alexander Zverev, even though he has played back-to-back Grand Slam finals, winning at Wimbledon and losing the French Open, still has to do a lot to reach Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner‘s level, believes Serena Williams‘ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. Zverev defeated Flavio Cobolli in five sets in the Wimbledon final.
But after taking the first set off Sinner (it was the first time Zverev won a set against Sinner since their match at the 2025 Vienna Open, Zverev couldn’t capitalize on his lead and lost the next three sets. The five-time Grand Slam champion improved his head-to-head record over Zverev to 11-4, with his win at the All England Club being his 10th consecutive win over Sascha.
Zverev is on the right path, but is he there? I don’t think so, not yet. It’s a big milestone for him to win his first Grand Slam and be in the final of the next one, especially on clay and grass. He has definitely reached another level. Is he at the level of Alcaraz and Sinner yet? I don’t think so. And even though he played some of his best tennis in the final and Sinner was not at his best, he still didn’t win it.
Patrick Mouratoglou said on his Instagram
Alcaraz, however, was on the sidelines during the French Open and Wimbledon. He hasn’t competed since the Barcelona Open, where he won the opening-round match but was forced to withdraw due to a wrist injury. The seven-time Grand Slam champion won the Australian Open by defeating Novak Djokovic and became the youngest man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam.
Otherwise, he starts, for example, the US swing, and he knows he’s going to beat those other guys because he has margin; he starts to again control from the baseline, not be so aggressive, it will show that he didn’t really make the step up. He needs to practice this every single match, which he hasn’t done yet.
Patrick Mouratoglou added
Zverev has also played the US Open final, back in 2020. He couldn’t capitalize on his two-set lead and ended up losing to Dominic Thiem.
Alcaraz’s name is on the entry list for the Cincinnati Masters, where last year, he received a walkover from defending champion Sinner in the final. The Spaniard is also the reigning US Open champion. Apart from the Australian Open, Alcaraz also clinched the Qatar Open this year.
Diego Nargiso explains why Jannik Sinner misses Carlos Alcaraz a lot
Jannik Sinner has always said that not only does the tennis world need Carlos Alcaraz, but he too, because rivalry has made him continuously work on himself. Former ATP player Diego Nargiso talked about the rivalry during an interview with Il Mattino.

Sinner certainly misses Alcaraz a lot. Rivals help you improve and push yourself further. There is great respect and esteem between them, but at the same time, there is a desire to surpass oneself.
Alcaraz holds a 10-7 head-to-head lead over the 24-year-old but lost their last two matches, in the finals of the 2025 ATP Finals and this year’s Monte-Carlo Masters. The former World No.1 has played three finals this year, winning titles at the Australian Open and the Qatar Open.
Sinner, on the other hand, has clinched six titles, all Big Titles (the first five Masters 1000s of the season and Wimbledon). He is next set to compete at the Canadian Open, which he won in 2023 but skipped last year. The South Tyrol native, a 10-time champion at the Masters 1000s, is on a 34-match winning streak at this level.
