Patrick Mouratoglou Says Alexander Zverev’s French Open Triumph ‘Not Enough’ to Beat Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have heavily dominated in Grand Slams since the 2024 season, as they have won a combined 10 Grand Slam titles. Alexander Zverev ended their dominance by taking home the French Open after a thrilling five-setter against Flavio Cobolli.
But Zverev did not face Alcaraz or Sinner en route to the win. The seven-time Grand Slam champion was forced to skip the tournament due to a wrist injury.
Sinner suffered a dramatic collapse in the second round against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. He needed just one game to clinch the match, but he was hit by severe body cramps and ended up losing the match in five sets.
Then there was 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. In the third round, a day after Sinner’s exit, Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca came from two sets down to upset the Serbian great. So Zverev did not face any of these multiple-time Grand Slam champions on his way to the title. This is why Serena Williams‘ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, said Zverev’s French Open triumph is not enough to beat the duopoly of Sincaraz.
There are two ways to become a champion. First, you beat the best in the world and become the best. That’s what Novak did by beating [Roger] Federer and [Rafael] Nadal to become world number one. Second, an opportunity arises because there comes a time when the best players are absent, and one or two guys take that space. Once they have this space, their confidence is completely different. And then, they are then potentially able to beat the best. And that’s what happened with Zverev.
Patrick Mouratoglou said on Instagram
Zverev’s confidence skyrocketed after his Roland Garros win. Sascha, who, before this season, hadn’t progressed beyond the fourth round of Wimbledon, advanced to the final only to lose to Sinner.
Is that enough to beat Alcaraz and Sinner? Apparently not. He lost in the Wimbledon final. But we feel that he’s closer. If, with this opportunity, he’s winning his second Grand Slam, then it can be another story. Same if [Rafael] Jodar or [Ben] Shelton win the US Open, thanks also to the absence of the best players or the fact that they aren’t at 100% ready, then those guys can have a completely different career.
Patrick Mouratoglou added
Alcaraz was forced to skip Wimbledon as well, but he is set to return to the US Open after a long injury hiatus. He was last seen in action in the first round of the Barcelona Open. Sinner withdrew from the US Open due to a knee injury.
Andy Roddick on Carlos Alcaraz’s return after injury
Former ATP player Andy Roddick is “thrilled” about Carlos Alcaraz‘s return. Roddick initially thought the Spaniard would skip the US Open, since he has not played a match since the Barcelona Open.

But before competing in singles, Alcaraz will be playing mixed doubles with none other than Serena Williams. Although Alcaraz did not play any warm-up tournaments, the 2003 US Open champion believes mixed doubles can help him get into a rhythm.
Now all of a sudden during fan week, if you’re Carlos, I think you play mixed doubles. I think it adds a little value to your singles venture, and I don’t know if I would say that normally… I think he should play mixed doubles if he can play.
Andy Roddick said on his Served podcast
Alcaraz will be bidding to defend his title in the New York Major. He defeated Sinner last year and clinched his second title in the tournament.
Alcaraz will be chasing his third title of the season after his wins at the Australian Open and the Qatar Open. He also made the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters but lost the title to Sinner.
