In Short
  • Miguel Nadal believes Carlos Alcaraz faces less competition than Rafael Nadal did during his career.
  • Alcaraz is currently sidelined due to a wrist injury and will miss the Roland Garros tournament.
  • Jannik Sinner is the only player currently challenging Alcaraz, having recently improved their head-to-head record.

If compared to Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz has it easy when it comes to the level of competition, believes Miguel Nadal, the uncle of the 22-time Grand Slam champion. Miguel said the only player who challenges Alcaraz is his arch-rival, Jannik Sinner.

Alcaraz and Sinner have won nine Grand Slam titles since the 2024 season. Recently, in the Monte-Carlo Masters final, the Italian ace stopped Alcaraz from defending his title, and this helped him improve his head-to-head record over the Spaniard to 7-10.

Miguel, during his interview with BetBrothers, compared Alcaraz with his nephew, saying the seven-time Major champion did not have to face players like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray.

We are talking about a player who has everything with Carlos Alcaraz. He has a great serve, a great forehand, a backhand, a powerful physique, he is fast, and he handles pressure. One positive aspect is that the competition is currently quite low.

Miguel Nadal said

Sinner is competing in Madrid and will be playing in the semifinals for the first time in his career. The World No.2, after knocking out Rafael Jodar, scheduled his match against Arthur Fils.

Today, the only player who casts a shadow over Alcaraz is Sinner. In Rafael’s time, there was Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Alexander Zverev, Juan Martin Del Potro, David Ferrer. With all those players, you could face them in the quarter-finals or even the first round, and they could eliminate you. Today, in Alcaraz’s case, there is a big difference. I don’t see a wide group of players who have options to win a Grand Slam.

Miguel Nadal added

Alcaraz is not in Madrid, as he skipped the fourth Masters 1000 of the season due to a wrist injury sustained during the Barcelona Open. His defeat to Sinner in the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters saw him lose his No.1 ranking. Alcaraz will also not be playing the Roland Garros, where he emerged victorious in the previous two seasons.

Patrick Mouratoglou wants Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to play the UTS Tour

Serena Williams‘ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, co-founded the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) Tour in 2020. Since then, several top players have competed in it, including Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have yet to participate in the tournament. Mouratoglou, during his interview with  Spazio Tennis, said it’s his dream to see Alcaraz and Sinner play on the UTS Tour.

It’s my dream to have Carlos and Jannik participate. I understand that when they play tournaments that are not ATP Tour tournaments, their financial expectations are super high, because that’s their value, and I don’t discuss it. I hope one day the conditions will make them feel like, ‘Oh, I would like to play it, it looks really cool, fun and I am also happy to play some real matches before that tournament’. Maybe one day I’ll have them, and I really hope I will.

Sinner is bidding to become the first man to win the first three Masters 1000 of the season. The four-time Grand Slam champion has already become the second man, after Novak Djokovic, to win the first three Masters 1000 of the season, and he is also the eighth man to complete the Sunshine Double.

He is also chasing his fifth consecutive Masters 1000 of the season. Sinner is on a 21-match winning streak this year. After Madrid, he will play in Rome, where he finished as runner-up last year. At the French Open, Sinner will be bidding to complete the Career Grand Slam.
