The Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay showered praise on Chicago Bears’ Caleb Williams ahead of their game on Saturday afternoon. The Rams and Bears are looking for their second win of the season after not-so-satisfying opening weeks.
Through the initial three games, Chicago Bears rookie Caleb Williams hasn’t enjoyed top-tier performances. The 2024 first overall draftee is yet to show his worth as they head into the fourth week. Nevertheless, the Rams aren’t overlooking Williams, who has played excellent football in college with a Heisman to his name, unlike some other names.
McVay said that he has been studying Williams for a long time, starting from the rookie’s tenure in Oklahoma and USC. The 38-year-old stated that Williams has the body of work and resume of a strong competitor.
McVay expressed that he thought Williams was a natural first pick for a long time. He added that Williams has a knack for processing the game, for working withing timing and rhythm and delivering accurate, well-timed passes. The HC also pointed out that Williams is a hard person to defend and poses a significant challenge for an opponent.
The Rams, running in high confidence after the upset over San Francisco 49ers, are indeed a challenge for Williams. Nevertheless, the game can change on its head like the win over Cincinnati Bengals did for Jayden Daniels in Washington DC. Daniels is one of the biggest comparisons for Williams in this season.
Sean McVay reminisces last Bears outing at Soldier Field
At 30y and 11m, Sean McVay became the youngest coach in NFL modern era in 2017, putting rest to a 42-year record held by Lane Kiffin of Oakland Raiders. The Rams have played the Bears four times after appointing McVay as head coach in 2017.
McVay and the Rams have won all three home games against the Bears, in 2019, 2020, and 2021. However, their last game at Soldier Field and McVay’s first game against the Bears as Rams coach in 2018, didn’t go very well. The Bears humbled the Rams 15-7. Speaking on the same, McVay added that it still brings him nightmares.
The Rams went till the Super Bowl in that year, eventually losing to New England Patriots. McVay won his first ring three years later, defeating the Bengals in the final.
McVay is one of the best coaches in Los Angeles Rams history with a win pct above .600 in 118 games, which is second to only John Robinson in terms of games coached for the franchise.
